Kinard. Beginning business here several years ago as a bookkeeper for Mr. J. R. Carmichael, he has persistently pushed his way into business world turning to his account the opportunities that came in his way and now finds himself at the head of a number of very important interests. He has adapted no schemes, has tried to displace no one in business, but all along eternal avenues that seemed naturally to open up to him, and each of these has responded to his almost magic touch with a liberal and an honest profit. Foremost in the list of Mr. Kinards enterprise stands the Jackson Telephone Exchange, with considerably more than a hundred users, and his long lines touching nearly every post office and neighborhood in the county. This system was begun by the establishing of a telephone line to Indian Spring. Later on other lines were added and thence came the decision of the owner to put in a telephone exchange. There were prophecies that this was a step in alliance of the growth of the town and that it would not be a paying investment, but developments have proved that Mr. Kinard knew the situation and that his judgment was good. From the start the system has grown until instead of a few subscribers using hones for the novelty of the thing there is a list of more than a hundred who regard these privileges as a necessity. An important factor in the building up of this popular business has been the uniform kindness and courtesy with which patrons have been treated. It has also been the constant care of the manager to see that every facility is provided for promptly and efficiently serving the public. The Jackson Telephone Exchange is now one of the leading features of our business, and he system which governs it is a model one and worthy of imitation. Mr. Kinard also conducts a large coal business and in this as in other branches of his business he makes it a rule to deal fairly and promptly with his customers, thereby rendering it pleasant for them to deal with him. The Standard Oil Co. has a very efficient agent here in the person of Mr. Kinard. The business of the company is rapidly increasing and the agency here is one of the most satisfactory in the state. In the line of fire insurance Mr. Kinard is a past master and has such customers who have such confidence in him is such that they just place themselves in his hands to be taken care of, never asking what company he will put them in, but feeling assured that in every case he will do the fair, square thing by them. No man in Jackson has more friends than Steven Kinard and no man has done more to deserve friends. Jackson Progress Argus – December 7,1900 Note: Photo of Steven B. Kinard with article.
