Transcribed by Sloan S. Mason, Slomas7@aol.com "Public Intelligencer" 1807-1809 Chatham County, Georgia June 3, 1808, page 4, column 3 June 7, 1808, page 4, column 3 (same article appears again) Source-"Index to Savannah, Ga. Newspapers" Bk. 1806-1810 Georgia State Archives, microfilm Drawer:79, box 6 ROBBERS Committed to Waynesborough Jail On Sunday the 28thd day of April, was taken and committed to the Jail of Burke County, that notorious HORSE THEIF and HOUSE ROBBER, HARDY FULGHAM, alias HARDY FLOYD Son in law to Insel SPENCE, of said county; and a few days after, was also committed, said Insel SPENCE and his son John. The first of these, Hardy FULGHAM, alias Hardy FLOYD, has been charged with many crimes, both of House Robbing, and Horse Stealing, and for the space of four years has been harbored by said Insel SPENCE and his family. FULGHAM, alias FLOYD, is about 30 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, well mad and active, very much pock pitten, which alteration in his countenance has been made since the year 1804, when he left his family, on account of being detected in his villainous schemes; and it is quite probable he has persevered in them ever since. Incel SPENCE and his son John, were committed as being accessories in the breaking the dwelling house of Mr. Edward PATE, of this county (Burke) and robbing him of 441 dollars, and afterwards concealing, and fending off Zachariah SPENCE, brother of Insel, and a mulatto man named BEN, the property of said Insel, who were principals in said robbery. After this last robbery was committed, Zachariah SPENCE, John SPENCE and the mulatto Ben, absconded, and went to Savannah, where they joined FULGHAM, and all made there way to the Creek Nation, by way of the Alaatamaba river, where they were seen with two or three Negro Boys, and some horses, which were considered to have been stolen. It was therefore thought proper to give the public notice, that if any persons have been injured by the bandits of Robbers, they may avail themselves of it-and it is earnestly requested that all such, together with all others who have any knowledge of their infamous conduct, will come forward-thereby aiding to bring the robbers to justice-and to benefit the public. JOHN SPENCE is about 25 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, pale complexion, he has been absent a greater part of his time for two years, and it is believed he has been with FULGHAM, alias FLOYD. INSEL SPENCE is about 50 years of age, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, very talkative about his religion and unexampled honesty. ZACHARIAH SPENCE, brother of Insel, is now laying out-he is about 35 years of age, 5 feet 4 or 5 inches high, with very crooked knees and ankles, not easily described, a ghostly paleness in his face, scarcely resembling human. FULGHAM and John SPENCE, were taken together, and it is supposed they stole some Negroes about Savannah, from the circumstance of their being seen when crossing the Alatamaba, with Negro boys, soon after they left Savannah. (The printers in this and the adjoining States will and the public good by giving the above a few insertions) End of Document: This same article appears on June 7, 1808. (Note: Incel SPENCE, b. about 1750 was originally from Dobbs Co., NC. - he served in the Rev. War, enlisted 10 July 1778 in the 10th Reg. As a private in Bradley's Co.)
