H. McKibben during Christmas. When first brought before the court he waived a preliminary trial and demanded indictment by the grand jury, but after lying in jail for several days he notified the court that if he could be heard he would plead guilty. He was accordingly tried before judge Carmichael and sentenced to twelve months in the chain gang. Lem Carr another colored youth of only twelve summers was brought before Judge Carmichael, charged with stealing a gold watch from a dwelling in Flovilla.
