Zebulon, Pike County, Georgia While seeking refuge under the branches of a tree from a terrific storm, Mr. James M. Whatley of Monroe county and Mr. George Taylor of Butts county, were struck by lightening and instantly killed on Friday at about 2 o’clock at Orchard Hill. The Thirteenth Georgia Regiment of Confederate veterans were holding a reunion in a delightful grove at Orchard Hill and a large number of veterans were present to enjoy the occasion. At about two o’clock a terrible thunderstorm burst upon the little village. The crowd sought refuge in the neighboring houses and under the spreading branches of the sturdy oaks close by. The tree under which Mr. Whatley and Taylor were standing was torn into splinters by a fearful bolt of lightening and the two men were seen to fall to the ground, both killed instantly. Mr. Whatley was a well known and esteemed citizen of Monroe county. He has resided for many years a few miles north of Goggans Station. He was a gentleman of attractive personality and was at all times genial and jovial. Mr. Whatley was about fifty years old and leaves a large family who have the deepest sympathy of a host of friends in their great sorrow. Mr. Taylor was a former citizen of this county and a brother of John F. Taylor of Barnesville. He had $2,000 insurance on his life.
