Jackson Argus – Week Of October 22, 1896 October 22, 1896
The Factory Will be in Operation Soon – Cottages all Occupied

It will be some time in November before the Pepperton Cotton Mills will be in
operation.  The managers have experienced some trouble and delay in getting all
the machinery delivered promptly.   The big engine is in position and has been
tried and found to alight.   The ponderous machine of 180 horse power will be
run by Mr. Gilbert, who has had charge of some of the immense engines used in
North Alabama for manufacturing purposes.  The diameter of the fly wheel is 16
feet with a belt surface of 2 ½  feet across.   Mr. Asbel the efficient general
superintendent is having the machinery put in place as fast as it arrives.   The
factory is equipped with a perfect system of water works and at a moments notice
the whole building can be flooded with water.

When everything is complete and in good working order Jackson can boast of one
of the best equipped cotton factories in the south.

The cottages erected for the operatives are very nice structures for their
purposes.   They are nicely painted and conveniently arranged.   Several
families have already moved into them.   Other operatives will be here soon from
different positions of the state.

The brick store is now in good shape with shelves of goods and is under the
management of Mr. T. M. Furlow.
