The teacher Emma Woodward, did herself credit in drilling the children as well as the patrons, for they all did their part well. Commissioner Maddox was called on and made a short talk. He urged them to better equip their school building, telling them that they were not able but if they would spend their money that way instead of buying “all day suckers”, they could do better. He said he saw a man pull a stick out of his mouth the other day with a sucker hung to it and it frightened him. He thought the man had pulled the lining of his stomach out. He told them of the swarms of negroes at court and the fines they paid, and told them this money should go to the teacher. They cheered him on all these points and accepted them as coming from a friend. They cheered him greatly when he told them that when they quit their devilment he would be willing to be doubled taxed to help them. A colored preacher from Jackson answered Mr. Maddox in behalf of the school and alluded to him as a beacon light from a superior race trying to call his race up higher. When it comes to visiting schools Mr. Maddox fills the bill.
