S. Whitten of Andersonville, S. C. drowns in sight of his companions, was very popular young man, remains shipped home. Mr. J. S. Whitten, in charge of one of the hoisting engines at the plant of the Central Georgia Power Company, was drowned in the Ocmulgee river Saturday afternoon about 7 o’clock while attempting to swim across the river. Together with a number of his companions he had gone into the river, about three or four hundred yards below the dam, for a swim, he being in the rear of his companions. When near the opposite side of the river his strength gave out and he was heard to call for assistance but before aid could reach him he was drowned and all efforts to resuscitate the young man proved in vain. Mr. Whitten, who was about 25 years of age, was a most estimable young man, well thought of and popular with all who knew him. His death cast gloom over the entire camp. The body was brought to Jackson and prepared for shipment. It was sent to his home at Anderson, S.C. Sunday night.
