C. Adgate – Killed Adgate, Jasper County, Georgia – October 27 The south bound special freight train on the Macon and Northern railroad killed Mrs. H. C. Adgate this afternoon at 1:30 o’clock. Mr. and Mrs. Adgate live on the east side of the railroad, while the depot and post office is on the west side. Mr. Adgate had gone to Monticello and in his absence Mrs. Adgate attended to the post office and store. For some purpose she started from the house to the store and the freight, as above stated, struck her, breaking her leg and crushing her skull. The train was running very fast and there is a curve to the left, going north from the store, hence the train was upon her before she knew it. Sad indeed was it that no one knew of the accident and for possibly one hour Mrs. Adgate lay beside the railroad in the hot sun. A Negro going to the gin, which is just above the station, found her. Immediately Dr. Garland was sent for and the neighbors carried the almost lifeless body of Mrs. Adgate into her house. She only lived a few minutes after the removal. Mrs Adgate was near 70 years old, and was very stout and vigorous. Mrs. M. A. Turner, of Monticello, is her daughter, and she has a daughter in the north. The coroner will hold an inquest tonight. The deceased will be buried at Monticello tomorrow.
