Jackson Argus – Week of March 11, 1897
Ned Fletcher – Drowned

A negro by the name of Ned Fletcher, who lived on the farm of Mr. Homer Barnes,
near town, was crossing a foot-log enroute for home last Saturday night and lost
his foothold and was drowned.   The negro’s wife got uneasy about him Sunday
morning and went to hunt him and when she got to the creek she found his hat
floating on the water.    The body was found Sunday evening and an inquest held
Monday.   There was no foul play but a matter of accident.  The Negro was
perfectly sober.
