N.J. HARMON, FORMER RESIDENT, DIES IN CHARLOTTE Jackson and Butts county friends of Mrs. N.J. Harmon of Charlotte, N.C., formerly of Jackson, were sorry to learn of her death at the home of her daughter in Charlotte, Friday, March 3. Mrs. Harmon was 89 years old and was born and reared in Butts county. She was the former Miss Leila Bankston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Riley Bankston, pioneer citizens of this county. She was the widow of the late Newton Judson Harmon, Sr. (note: this is incorrect - his name was Newton Joseph Harmon. There was no Jr.)well known citizen and editor of the Jackson News, who died 41 years ago March 4 of this year. (note: this is also confusing - he died March 4, 1909, and was the editor of the Jackson Argus Progress.) She was a woman of many fine traits of character, and found her chief joy in looking after her home and her large family of children. She joined the Baptist church in early girlhood and at the time of her death was the oldest member of the Jackson Baptist church. Her children cared tenderly for her in her declining years, and especially during her last, prolonged illness. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 11 0'clock at Halston Funeral Home with the past of the First Baptist church of Atlanta in charge. Mrs. jack Shular sang "Rock of Ages" with mrs. Avon Gaston as the piano accompanist. The pallbearers were her grandsons. Interment was in the family lot in the Jackson cemetery. Relatives and friend sent beautiful floral offerings attesting their love and esteem for Mrs. Harmon. Survivors include eight daughters, Mrs. H.C. Owens, Mrs. V.H. Downing, Mrs. W.W. Varnedoe, Mrs. J.R. Linton of Atlanta; Mrs. Mamie Mcclure, Mrs. Hope Mcclue, Mrs. Walter Jones, Jackson; mrs. J.H. Vickers, Charlotte, N.C.; two sons N.J.Harmon, Jr. (note: he was not a jr.), Atlanta; James G. Harmon, Savannah, a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Additional Comments: This was my great-grandmother. My grandfather, Newton Judson Harmon, was only 5 or 6 years old when his father passed away and Leila spent many years raising her young family alone, often taking in sewing and laundry. Her two sons both graduated from Georgia Tech in Atlanta. All were well educated and well read.
