Though all of the “bugs” had not been eliminated, this program provided a way to locate some families during this era. The term “community” is used here to loosely define the area either side of the Henry/Butts county line, from Ellistown to Fincherville, generally centered on Sardis Baptist Church, where many families attended. Symbols were placed as nearly as possible to the actual sites. My parents, Bernard F. and Thelma(Carter)Knowles provided the details. Mom grew up in Henry Co. and attended the Pine Hill and Ellistown schools. During most of this period, she lived in the Jinks and McCart homes along Moccasin Gap Rd. Though born at Flovilla, and entering the much larger school there, Dad’s family returned to their Fincherville Rd. roots about 1917, living at Knowles and Wilson places near Ingram Rd. He attended the 2-room Fincherville school for 8 or 9 years-the 10th grade being created for him and first cousin, Opal Welch. Bernard’s father, Olin A. Knowles; his uncle, John W. Welch, and another kinsman, Jack Maddox were the trustees-or “commissioners” for the Fincherville school-approving the teacher and curriculum. The Pine Hill school was closed when 3-room Ellistown school opened. The Fincherville and Ellistown schools closed when the county schools were consolidated in the 1930s- [the Ellistown school building was later incorporated into a large home]. The nearest replacement schools, I believe, were then located at Ola and Sandy Ridge in Henry Co., and in Butts Co. at Tussahaw on Hwy. 36. Only the major roads are shown on this map, and obviously many home sites are not included. During the time indicated there were numerous secondary field roads-and shortcuts, as much of the land was under cultivation. All of the roads were dirt of course. Residents help string telephone line service along Fincherville Road during the teens-or even earlier, but electricity did not come to this area until the REA was formed. Tenant farmers and sharecroppers moved often, so this map represents only recalled family locations, roughly covering the period of 1915 to 1930. Deed records and tax digests should be checked for more precise locations of your families. This image was sized so that everything was legible on a 17 inch monitor. I like to open it with a simple image editor-"Paint", available on most Microsoft systems-usually listed under,‘Programs’, ‘Accessories’. Using this program you can clone icons-then insert and add text for them, for any additional features that you might like to include on your own version of this map! Larry C. Knowles-May 8, 2011 Additional Comments: Larger copies of the original map were donated to the Butts County library in 2001(or 2002)-but they seem to have disappeared. I don’t recall donating to the Henry County library. But, I probably planned to, and should have. A few minor features have been added, and corrections made, to this digital version-which was scanned from those early copies. *Cosmi Inc. no longer supports the 1998 version, or a revised “talking” edition, of its “Travel Maps-USA”. The CD did not include an End User Agreement, and online inquires were not acknowledged. Perhaps like many other mapping programs, it was made obsolete by GPS navigational systems-but was, for this purpose, extremely useful! L.C.K.
