Knowles, likely painted in Nashville or New Orleans c.1858, where he attended the University of Nashville(Nov. 1857-Feb. 1858)and later graduated from the University of Louisiana(Tulane). James Knowles was born in Henry Co. GA April 24, 1833, the only son of James(Sr.)and Lucy(Thomas)Knowles. In 1855 & 1856, he taught school at the O'Dell Academy, in Bersheba in Henry Co. In early 1857, he moved to Butts Co., where he studied medicine under Dr. James H. Bryans at Worthville. On November 5, 1859 In Butts Co., he married Lavonia Catherine Williamson, oldest daughter of Nathan C. and Agness(Thompson)Williamson. Before his premature death, he lived and practiced medicine near today's Ellistown in Henry Co. His personal "Journal"(diary)covering the years 1852-1858, is now in the Georgia State Archives(microfilm-private papers).
