GA This faded photo displays the prominent stone vaults of Nathan C. Williamson and three of his small children. In Nathan's estate records in 1855, his widow, Agness(Thompson)Williamson paid a Mr. Nelson for "walling four graves". Agness was Nathan's second wife. They married June 25, 1840. Nathan had divorced his first wife, Irena Summerlin in September 1839. Agness raised two children from that marriage to adulthood; Thomas J. & Winney Ann; and two of her own, Lavonia Catherine-b.July 4, 1842(m. James B. Knowles-Nov. 1859)and Mary Elizabeth-born c.1847(m. John J. Buffington-Nov 1865). Nathan C. Williamson had inheirted this land from his grandfather, John Williamson Sr. in 1831. He had come to Butts Co. from Jackson Co. shortly before the old man's death. He was named as coexecutor with his father(John Jr. of Jackson Co.). The Butts Co. will left Nathan 600 + acres, and three slaves; boys, Jack & Ben, and likely their mother, Rachel. Named Williamson children received $1.00 each. John Williamson Jr. came to Butts Co. for distribution of the estate; then returned to Jackson Co. with livestock and a number of slaves(he died there in October 1849). He evidently also claimed any remaining assets which his father may have left in Jackson Co. Also in this photo: Bernard F. Knowles(late)of Conyers GA stands beside the obelisk of his great grandparents-James B. and Lavonia C.(Williamson) Knowles. In the middle of the picture is the tombstone of his third great grandfather, John Williamson Sr.(see separate photo)who settled here about 1826. Rev. Soldier John Williamson Sr. was born in Ireland c.1740, coming to America as a small child. He married young widow Margaret(Lesley)Mitchell in VA. He served in the Virginia Militia during the war, then claimed bounty land in Wilkes Co. GA. He later purchased 1150 acres in Franklin Co. in 1792(taken into Jackson Co. in 1796). He was a weaver and dyer, and apparently ran a small mill along Curry Creek in Jackson Co. He and Margaret became estanged in the early 1800s. She moved into the household of bachelor son, William Williamson; and died in Jackson Co. on May 19, 1828. She is buried in the Williamson plot there, between Little Curry Creek & Oconee River, with William, and son, John Jr., and daughter Sarah, wife of Bolar Moon.(and numerous other kin). John Sr. had won the Butts Co. land(originally in Henry Co.-#250/8D.)in the 1821 Land Lottery. After disbursing land and slaves to children in Jackson Co., he came to Butts Co. about 1826 with 8 to 10 slaves. He soon purchased adjoining land from Joseph Summerlin and Jordon McCullers. The DAR marked his gravesite(date unknown). Lavonia Knowles's oldest son, Oscar B. Knowles, identified the site!
