The Fincher Family Cemetery-Arra(Dearing)Fincher

The Fincher Cemetery is located on landlot #217/8D., on the eastern side of 
Fincherville Rd. approximately 1/3 mile south of its junction with Keys Ferry 
Rd. When these photos were made, it was located in the middle of a large field. 
Currently it is found in the front yard of a residence, and is very well 
maintained. After the Civil War the community which grew around the junction 
became known as Fincherville, after its most prominent early citizen, John 
Lumpkin Fincher, who is buried here with a son, two wives(sisters)and his 
mother-in-law.

In February 1862 in Jasper Co., John L. Fincher married Arra A. Dearing, 
daughter of Thomas J. Dearing. In May of 1862, John first served the war 
effort, joining "Anderson Guards" in Newton Co. On August 26 ,1863 Thomas J. 
Dearing  purchased 182-1/2 acres of the above lot from Dr. James H. Bryans
($3000 for improved land). In late 1863 or early 1864, Thomas J. Dearing died 
in the war. In March 1864, John Fincher would lose Arra and a son(the first who 
were buried here). In May 1864, John married Arra's sister, Sarah Adaline, in 
Butts Co.[For more facts see biographies: "Fincherville Finchers"]

In this overview, grandson Bernard F. Knowles(late of Conyers)stands behind the 
tombstone of his great, great grandmother, Matilda(Kitchens)Dearing. The large 
obelisk commemorates his great, grand parents John L. and Sarah A. Fincher(and 
her sister Arra & infant son).

This view shows the birth & death of Arra A.("Annie")Dearing Fincher, first 
wife of John L. Fincher. Within a few months, John Fincher married her sister, 
Sarah Adaline Dearing(a photo of the remaining obelisk side for Sarah was not 
scanned at this time). She was born March 21, 1847 & died November 27, 1923.
