Knowles of Conyers GA stands in the gate opening of the Gray Family Cemetery in Butts Co. Now in a very isolated area of northern Butts Co., the plot was provided for in the will of Allen Gray in Nov. 1886. Though the landlot was not mentioned, Allen had purchased this portion from his father’s estate in February 1833. In November 1832, he had married Peletiah O’Nail, daughter of Zachariah O‘Nail(O‘Neal). James Gray Sr. had purchased the lot when it was entirely in Henry Co. The new Butts Co. line roughly bisected it in 1825! There is evidence of ten or twelve graves. Only three are marked. The broken tombstone of Allen and “Pelly” Gray is propped against a pine tree, in the lower left; its base is in the extreme corner. Beyond the tree is the fallen vault of their son, Levi Newton Gray. Other likely burials include: James Gray Sr.(1830)and wife, Elizabeth(Johnson)Gray(1863)-and sons, William and James Gray Jr.(both in 1857).
