The principals were highly colored, the circumstances were highly common place and the ceremony was highly enjoyed by those who heard it. Will Jones and Sallie Hoard were the poetic and musical names filed with the ordinary. It is so seldom that we run across such a euphonious and symphonious combination of romantic names that when we do see them brought together in harmonious matrimonial union it reminds us of a May morning when the Cupids cupidly play amongst the palm leaves, live on “angel food” and wet their tender whistles in the Suwanee river. The marriage ceremony was performed by Judge Henry C. Thaxton of the 618th district, Georgia Militia. His preliminary questions were: Have you ever been married before?” No, sah, from both. How old are you? Ise 20 said William, and Ise 19, said Sally. Then I suppose everything is all right, remarked Judge Thaxton. Yesser, hits all right, from the bride-about-to-be. Then stand up buth of you. They stood up in the court hous hall about three feet apart. Stand close together O, pshaw! Exclaimed Sally. Join your right hands. I haint got no right hand, hits off, said William. Then hold tight with your left hand. That’s right. Friends we have met here in the hall of this court house to solemnize a marriage contract between Will Jones and Sally Hoard. If anybody has any objection let them now speak or forever hereafter hold their peace. I hear none. Will you take this woman whom you hold by the hand to be your lawful wedded wife – yesser, to love – yesser, honor – yesser, in sickness and health – yesser, forsaking all others cleave unto her – yesser, so long as you both shall live? Yes, sah! With a very slight variation the string of interrogatories propounded to Sally received identical answers, with perhaps a few more responses and a little more emphasis. By the authority which I hold in my hand and by virtue of the authority conferred on me by law, I pronounce you man and wife, (Will and Sally smile at each other) and what God hath joined together let no man put asunder. The bride and groom then bought a box of sardines and crackers and ate their wedding dinner. No use to wish them good luck, for its headed their way.
