S. PARKER 1837-1882 This servant of the Lord was held in high esteem by Baptists, and the people generally throughout this section of the State, both for what he was and what he had done. He was born of poor and humble parentage, in Washington County, Georgia, in May 1837, left fatherless when but eight years of age, and deprived of educational advantages, he was compelled to work his way as best he could until he had reached his seventeenth year. When he was seventeen years old he was baptized by Rev. W. B. Lacy into the fellowship of Adoniram Baptist church of Christ in Henry County, Alabama. In 1862 he entered the Confederate army as a private soldier. Although the surroundings of a private soldier were unfriendly to the development of a spiritual life, he maintained through his three years of war, his Christian integrity, bringing no reproach on the name of Christ. It was during his army experiences that he felt his convictions of duty as to preaching the Gospel. He was discharged from the army and a parole was given him authorizing his return home on May 10, 1865, on the condition that he obey all the laws which were enforced previous to January 1, 1861. After his return home, his brethren, hearing of his conviction to preach the Gospel and that he desired to enter the ministry, granted him most cheerfully a license to preach wherever and whenever opportunities were presented. In 1867 he was called by his church to Ordination, and was duly ordained in Adoniram Baptist Church on the 2nd Sunday in July 1867, the Presbytery consisting of Brethren A. L. Martin and Benjamin Herndon. He then entered upon the full discharge of ministerial functions. For some two years he gave his time to the service of churches in Eastern Alabama, but, in the fall of 1868, receiving a call from a church in Southwest Georgia, he returned to his native state, settling within the bounds of the Bethel Association. He was instrumental in the organization of many churches in this Association and was the first pastor of many of the churches, and held his pastorates for long periods of time. Especially was he instrumental, aided by Dr. C. B. Holmes, in building up a good working Baptist Church at Bluffton, Clay County, Georgia. Brother Parker was a devoted Christian, full of zeal and energy. He was a good and faithful minister and his labors were abundantly blessed. Loved and highly esteemed by all who knew him. It was said of him in the Association soon after his death that the churches in the Association had sustained a great loss in his death. He died in Clay County, Georgia August 3, 1882. His last sermon was preached at Bluffton from the Text: "The Wages of Sin is Death, but the Gift of God is Eternal Life." He left a wife and six small children to mourn their irreparable loss. One of these children,. O. W. Parker, Sr. is now living in Edison, Georgia and a member of the Edison Baptist Church. Truly Brother Parker was a pioneer preacher of this Association. ***************************************************************************************************** Note from submitter I am really trying to find the name of this mans parents and/or siblings. His parents came from North Carolina, around the Wilkes Co. area, I believe, somewhere between 1820 to 1837. His father died around 1845-46. I suspect that he was the son of a John Parker, but not sure. On December 20th, 1860, he married Frances (Fannie) Cornelia Norris in Henry County, AL. According to her obituary, she was born in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. We can't find anything on her either, other than census records and obituary. (The Edison News, date unknown) This has been a brick wall for 15 years. Any kind of little hint might break the wall down. Just looking for the proverbial needle in the haystack, so to speak. My grandfather was James Edmund Parker, his oldest son. He remained in Henry County, Alabama until his death in 1948. If anyone has information on this man, please contact me at Charlene ***************************************************************************************************** following notes added by Debra Crosby & Charlene Parker ============================================================================================== The Christian Index dated January 11, 1883. It says the following: "PARKER--Rev. James S. Parker was born in Washington County, Ga., May 14, 1837, and died in Clay county, Ga. August 3rd 1883 (this is wrong; it's 1882). He was baptized by Rev. W. B. Long into the fellowship of Adoriam church in Henry county, Alabama in the 17th year of his age. Licensed by the same church in April 1865 and ordained in said church by A. L. Martin and Benjamin Herndon, July 1867. He soon after moved to Clay county, Georgia. Brother Palmer (Parker) was a devoted servant of God, full of zeal and energy, a sound, faithful and good preacher of the gospel. He was a fine singer and much beloved by all the churches he served as pastor and highly esteemed by all that knew him. He was a kind and affectionate husband and father. He has left a wife and six children to mourn over their irreparable loss. His children are nearly all small and are not able to labor but little. The churches which brother Parker preached to as pastor should feel it to be their duty to aid sister Parker in providing for his family until they are able to provide for themselves, which I hope they will do. Brother Parker, like a faithful soldier, died at his post contending for the faith once delivered to the saints. Help, Lord, for the godly man ceaseth.
