Paul M. Sayer, for the past two and one half years pastor of the Leary Baptist Church, was born in the old Red Hills of Habersham County, Georgia on October 22, 1899. The main portion of his childhood days were spent in Stephens county in the city of Toccoa. Brother Sayer completed the Elementary School work and one year of High School in the schools of his home county, and in the fall of 1917 entered Piedmont Academy at Demorest, Georgia. During this year he worked at odd jobs on the college campus and thereby paid all of his expenses. The next two years of high school work were done at Gibson-Mercer Academy located at Bowman, Georgia. At the time Gibson-Mercer was a Baptist school of the Mercer University system. In 1920 Bro. Sayer entered Mercer University and received his A. B. Degree from that Institution in the spring of 1924. In 1926 he graduated from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary at Louisville, Ky., with the degree of Th. M. In early life Brother Sayer showed inclinations along religious lines. He was reared in a Christian home by Christian parents. He served as President of the Sunbeam Society when a small boy, and was Secretary of his home church Sunday school for a number of years, and for two years was General Secretary of the Tugalo Baptist Sunday School Convention. In the year of 1918 the impression to launch out as a Minister of the Gospel became so urgent that he preached his first sermon at the New Hope Baptist Church in the Tugalo Association in September. He united with the Carnes Creek Baptist Church in August 1911 and was baptized along with ten other candidates. The Carnes Creek Church ordained him on March 30, 1919, and he immediately began serving the Currahee and Double Branches Churches in the Tugalo Association. During the four years spent at Mercer University, Cataula and Adairsville Churches were served and some country churches in the Consolation and Pulaski-Blekley Association were pastored while at college. Brother Sayer continued to supply and pastor small town and country churches in Indiana and Kentucky as he completed his educational career. Almost during the entire twelve years of ministerial life Evangelism has been one of the key-notes of Brother Sayer's work. In the summer of 1922 an evangelistic campaign of eight weeks length resulted in more than 300 additions to the churches where meetings were held. He has either been pastor or preacher in 55 Revival campaigns. In September 1928 Brother Sayer began his pastorate work in the Bethel Association by accepting the Morgan Baptist Church and moving on its field. During the two years there as pastor the Morgan Church maintained half-time preaching services for the first time in its history. In May 1929 Leary entered this field with Morgan and thus Brother Sayer began giving his full ministry among Bethel Baptists. After resigning at Morgan, Bethany, Pineview, Milford and Hillside were served in connection with Leary. Besides many other duties and services rendered to the Bethel Association, Brother Sayer was chosen by the Association as General Chairman of the Bluffton Encampment for its ninth annual meeting. Under his leadership the encampment was a great success that year. 1930 Calhoun Co. Ga Morgan ed 19-6 sheet 1b 27-Paul M.
