M. JORDAN, SR. Mr. R. M. Jordan, one of Calhoun County's most prominent men in farming, merchandising, banking, educational and religious work, was born in Calhoun County in the year 1865 near where Leary now stands, and has lived in the County all his life. He was born of humble parentage on a small farm and saw some of the hardships of Reconstruction Days. His parents were Arnold and Nancy Thomas Jordan. The material for his clothing during this early period was spun by his Mother. She was proficient with the spinning wheel and loom. When he was six years of age, a falling tree struck his father and he never recovered, but lingered for some time. This left his mother with five small children and without means, but her undying ambition and strong constitution enabled her to give her children a primary education. His early training and inherent qualities produced one of the most industrious and frugal men of the County. He married Miss Mamie McLauchlin and she has supported him loyally in his undertakings. His children are: W. D. Jordan, J. M. Jordan, and R. M. Jordan, Jr., and Mrs. R. E. Wilkinson of Leary, and Mrs. Frank Humber of Georgetown. They are prominent in business, social and religious affairs. They are exceptionally efficient in their several lines of endeavor at this time at Leary. On account of Brother R. M. Jordan's integrity and strong capabilities, he has served in many places of public trust. He was Councilman and Mayor of Leary for several terms, being connected with the forward movements of the city. When the people of the Leary School District wanted some one to lead them in the planning and erection of a modern school plant, they selected him and followed him in the accomplishment of the task. He served as a member of the County Board of Roads and Revenue for about ten years. The crowning effort of Brother Jordan's life though has been his work with and for the Baptist cause. He joined the Leary Baptist Church upon his moving into that city in 1892. He was ordained a Deacon of the Church there in 1898 and has remained an active one ever since. He has been Superintendent of the Leary Baptist Bible School for the past ten years. Under his leadership the church decided a few years ago to erect a modern brick building. He was made chairman of the building committee. Later he saw the necessity of completing the Bible School plant and now the Leary Baptist Church has a complete work house. He is a leader of the church in a financial and spiritual way. He has devoted his life to the uplifting of his City, School District, County and Church in a financial, educational, moral and spiritual way. Much of the progress of his community in all ways is the result of his efforts and the people honor him and follow his leadership. May his days be lengthened and usefulness continue. following notes added by Debra Crosby 1930 Calhoun Co. GA census Leary page 26 4 Jessie M Jordan 31 GA GA GA Mary V. 31 Ga Ga Ga Jessie M.
