N.L. MATHIS HAD STARTED DIVORCE PROCEEDINGS, LAWYER SAYS Funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. N.L. Mathis, of Albany, victims of a double tragedy at Williamsburg yesterday, were held at Morgan today, at the home of Mr. Mathis's sister. Internment was in the family cemetery there. Mrs. mathis was slain by her husband yesterday morning in the the railway station at Williamsburg when the latter cut her throat with a sharp knife and then fired a bullet into his brain. Both were dead within a few minutes. It was stated here this morning by Mrs. mathis's attorney, W.F. Bell, that she had filed divorce proceedings against her husband, July 19, charging cruel treatment, and had gone to the home of her brother-in-law at Williamsburg to live. She is said to have instructed her attorney not to tell Mr. mathis where she was, as she feared bodily harm should he locate her. Before leaving on the morning train for Williamsburg yesterday, Mr. Mathis is said to have secured a pistol from one of his sons on the pretext that he was going fishing and wanted the pistol for protection against snakes. None of the children knew that he had gone to Williamsburg. Mr. and Mrs. Mathis , until their separation, lived at 209 Second Street. Yesterday's report stated that they resided at 211 Second Street, but the houses in this block have recently been renumbered and the Mathis number was changed from 211 to 209.
