[January] 28, 98 Dr. [Dear] Sir I can not express the dificulty [difficulty] and inconvenience that attend, the present situation of the District, the Inconveniency that attend crossing such river as this to Petty Musters, at present this is geting [getting] to be the strongest district in the County. Hodges, the [unclear: Pervats]3 or 4 of them; [illegible], the Motes, 3 or 4 of them & the Leslies all lately moved into this dist. [district] it would be very unreasonable for this side to cross the River to Musters & the Indians so frequently encamped amongst us, and the other side would think hard to come over as it has a sufficient number of its self for a Company, as any other Dist. [District] The alteration last year is shocking as the district that included Cumberland Island & Kings bay, could not then or any time since Muster Ten Men liable to do duty exclusive of officers. We hope you will endeavor to have a 5th District on the So. [South] side the River but if that cant [can't] be effected do try to have them as they formerly stood & then each sid [side] the River would be to themselves, -- We wish you [added: (] could prevail with the Governor [added:)] to intercede with Congress to prevent the Indians coming below the line so much; as we are visited by considerable numbers, giving much uneasiness to the neighbourhood [neighborhood]. I am with respect yr Hbl [your Humble] Servant [Signed] Hugh Brown
