McDonald, Governor of Georgia, Milledgeville, G[eorgi]a / [Captain] Aaron Jernigan author: Jernigan, Aaron date: March 20, 1842 extent: 3p summary: This is a letter dated March 20, 1842 from Captain Aaron Jernigan to Charles J. McDonald, Governor of Georgia (1839- 1843), respecting the receipt of an order from the governor that he raise a detachment of thirty men and that a similar force be mustered under either Captain Solomon W. Morgan or Captain John J. Johnson. Jernigan indicates that he has already organized this force and suggests that the governor direct when and from whom they are to receive subsistence. [instant] with directions to raise a detachment of thirty men. and that you had directed Major Genl [General] Knight to order out a detachment of thirty men and to place them under the command of either Captain Morgan or Captain Johnson,, and I would assume the Command and so dispose the entire force So as to effect the most efficient protection to the Country, in reply to which I have to inform your Excellency that your order to me will be promptly attended to and that I raised and organized the detachment as follows one Lieutenant two Sergeants two Corporals twenty Six privates. as I thought it most prudent to have a Lieut to the detachment that I raised as the two detachments is about Sufficient to complete one company,, and that the two [deleted: [illegible]] detachments would require the Same number of officers as what one full company would, You will please inform me at the earliest date what way I will proceed to obtain forage and Subsitence [Subsistence] for the men and horses that is ordered into Service as it is not to be obtained in this district or a quantity [added: not] more then [than] will furnish them for two or three weeks, I will take the field on tusday [tuesday] next the 22nd inst [instant] with the Small force placed under my Command, I hope in a Short time that your Excellency will order out [added: a] additional force Sufficient to complete two full Companies and [added: have] them placed under the Command of a competent officer as I think that number of men under the command of a competent officer would be Sufficient to keep the Georgia frontier clear from Indian depredations I have the honor to be your Obt Servt [Obedient Servant] [Signed] Aaron Jernian His Excellency Charles J McDonald Governor of Georgia Page: [3] [ | ] Centrevillage GaC.C.
