The funeral with military honors will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Burnt Fort Chapel in White Oak. Burial will follow at Bickley Chapel Cemetery in White Oak. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Crippled Children's Hospital or to the American Cancer Society, Camden County Unit. Surviving are his wife, Shirley J. Thompson of Burnt Fort; a son, Ben W. Thompson Jr. of Boulder, Co.; a daughter, Sharon Virginia Thompson Hildebrand of Gainesville, Fla.; a sister, Mary Crews of Folkston; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Born in Waycross, Mr. Thompson had been a resident of Camden County since 1983. He was a retired command master chief from the U.S. Navy having served 35 years. He was also retired from Air Rework Facility in Jacksonville, Fla. He was a member of Burnt Fort Baptist Church, and a Mason, having been a past master of Woodbine Lodge #326. He was a member of Scottish Rite -- Knights Templar, Royal Arch Masons and York Rite. He was a member of Morocco Temple in Jacksonville. He was a past president of SEGA Shrine Club in Camden County. He was also a member of National Camping Travelers and served as Master of Travel, a Georgia director, and the national nominating committee.
