Wright writecjc@aol.com J.H. Kidd was a son of Oliver C. Kidd. They lived in Campbell Co. GA all or most of their lives. Richmond May the 4 1862 Camp Winder Va, Dearest Catherine, I embrace the presence of writing you a few lines. I am Well at present and hope by the blessing of God to Remain in health, hoping that these may find you and Ours in the same blessing. Of course I would be glad to enjoy a few hours of past time with you and them but that is out of the question now. We have had so very few years together. We left Atlanta Tuesday night and arrived at Augusta Wednesday and crossed the river into Carolina and started for Wilmington which we reached that night at 2:00. Then we crossed the river on a boat, the first I was ever on, and started for Richmond ( line unreadable) and reached this__________at__________all safe and nothing lost but__________ __________ _______________. (line unreadable), __________or__________the boys are all well and in very good spirits and all say they want to see their wives and children., I and Thomas Phillips was walking together yesterday Evening and he observed to me that he would be glad to see his child and here him talk awhile which come nigh overcoming my feelings and I had for the first time fight breaking into tears from the fact that it brings memories of the past rushing back to the mind like a turant that it took all my courage to man., Though as it is, we are all very well satisfied though not Happy. We have been very well treated thus far. Since we arrived Here we have houses to stay in and have decent equipment and in a word have done very well. We do not know when we will go soon, probably Tuesday but not before, from the fact that we have to draw our ration again before we move which I will know in the morning. We have heard nothing from the regiment at present, but were told That there has been a good deal of fighting in the peninsula, but We hear nothing of the 35\super th\nosupersub being in any of it., I have taken several walks through the city. On Friday I went to The cemetery and saw the art works in the cemetery. I saw where a little girl and boy had been buried and though is now, (line unreadable), Chained to a sapling with one foot raised and his tail swaged like He would pounce upon anything that approach and it was the bust Of the pet dog of the little boy which was a Newfoundland dog. I also saw the monument of President Monroe which is quite Beautiful thing that contained sepulcher which contain his Remains. I also saw where a sportsman had been buried and There was a dog standing by with his ears raised listening with a quail at his feet which his master had shot. You will understand that it was a dog made of metal., (line unreadable), while the soldiers that have died in Richmond have been buried, also one that undertaker prepared to be sent home. I have seen one die in the hospital since I arrived and they have about 10 in the__________ __________ ___________ day that dies in this________ ________ __________at Camp Winder. After I had wandered through the tombs to my satisfaction and saw a group of mourners mourning over the grave of some departed friend or relative, I went to the water works which was a grand scene. I saw a ball party engaged in a dance in the pleasure room which I thought to be the most unbecoming thing considering the war times I ever saw., On Saturday I went to the ship landing and saw several fine boats and great ships and then went to the government house where I saw Henry Clay's bust and Washington and Jefferson's and several others. Washington's was mounted on a charger and the char hoisted upon a monument 30 or 40 feet high with his fingers pointing to the west the same as in the battle of Trenton., I should write a good deal about what I have seen and would Interest you but I must close as I and tom are going to church To the First Baptist Church., So nothing more at present, but hope you will hold up under your distress as you have done in the past which has been a good, (line unreadable), First understand speaking on our parting that you acted the perfect lady. So farewell , kiss the children for me., J. H. Kidd, To, Catherine M.
