He married Amanda Jane Mapp in Old Campbell Co., GA on Nov. 22, 1856. Amanda's brother, William Mapp, was already married to Emanuel's sister, Elizabeth Hattaway. Amanda Mapp was born in GA on Jan. 29, 1832 to John Mapp and Sarah Brothers. Emanuel was a soldier in the Confederate cavalry; William Mapp died of disease in Richmond. The couple had 9 children grow to adulthood in their 57 years of marriage: Mrs. Louisa Teal, Lacy Hattaway, Mrs. Sarah Reeves, Joe Hattaway, John Hattaway, Eugene Hattaway, Tom Hattaway, Lela Hattaway, and Mrs. Lillie Terry. Amanda died August 3, 1914 and Emanuel on June 9, 1921. They are both buried at Friendship Baptist, a church they were founders of, and where several of their children and grandchildren are also buried. Date of picture unknown.
