He later moved to Campbell County, GA and served many chuirches in the area, including Ramah Baptist where he is buried. He and his wife, Polly Ann Mason, had the following children: Zebulon Miles Rainwater, Joseph Rainwater, Benjamin Rainwater, Emily Rainwater Golightly, Clariah Rainwater Sanders, Sarah Rainwater Moseley, Elizabeth Rainwater Sewell, Christina Rainwater Sanders, Frances Rainwater Miller, Martha Rainwater Segar, and Catherine Eliza Rainwater Luck. Polly died shortly after Benjamin shot and killed his older brother Miles. James remarried to a widow, Nancy Candler Dobbs in 1859, who was the aunt of Coca Cola founder, Asa Candler.
