He moved first to Coweta Co., GA, then to Campbell Co., where he served many churches in the area include Ramah Baptist where he is buried. He and his wife, Polly Ann Mason, had the following children Z. Miles, Joseph and Benjamin Rainwater; Emily Rainwater wife of Pinckney Golightly, Clariah Rainwater wife of Ebenezer Sanders, Sarah Rainwater wife of Jesse Moseley, Elizabeth Rainwater wife of Pierce Sewell, Christina Rainwater wife of Green Harris Sanders, Frances Rainwater wife of Ephraim Miller, Martha Rainwater wife of John Segar, and Catherine Eliza Rainwater wife of James Luck. After Polly's death, James remarried to a widow, Nancy Candler Dobbs, the aunt of Coca Cola founder Asa Candler. Both James and Polly are buried at Ramah Baptist Church.
