Introduction The purpose of this survey was to record and preserve information found on tombstones in Candler County, Georgia. Many vital statistics that appear on tombstones such as the dates of births and deaths may not be recorded elsewhere since death records were not required in Georgia until 1919. Additionally tombstones often contain other valuable genealogical information including family relationships, locations of births and deaths, marriage dates, occupations, and military service. The natural weathering process and industrialization rapidly erases inscriptions on wood and marble, thus this data is gradually being lost as stones become vandalized, damaged, and forgotten. The Candler County Historical Society had hoped to survey all 59 known cemeteries located in Candler County. Due to a lack of volunteers we were not able to include all 59. Also, there are probably many others that have been destroyed, abandoned, or are on private properties that are not known. Every effort has been taken to locate and mark each gravesite and record inscriptions as they appear. Some inscriptions on the tombstones were not accurate, but most have been recorded as read. This has been a lengthy undertaking and thus there have been many deaths since the project began which do not appear in the surveys. Please note the date of the survey for each cemetery as well as the name of the surveyors. The Historical Society would like to thank all volunteers: surveyors, typists, and proofreaders whose long hours and hard work made this project possible. We would also like to extend thanks to the L.C. Anderson Memorial Library staff, Probate Judge Charles Beasley and secretary Hazel Phillips, Cal Dean, Richard Crotwell, Carolyn Jones, Danny Olliff, Carvy Snell, Betty Spaid, Jane Stanton, and Colleen Walling. A very special thank-you goes to Helen Sharpley who served as chairman of this project and to Lorine Hendricks who assisted her.
