Carroll County GA PAYNE/BOYD/SLONE BIBLE RECORDS File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by JodieK444@aol.com Judy Fowler Kilgore http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/carroll.htm Table of Contents page: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm Georgia Table of Contents: PAYNE/BOYD/SLONE BIBLE RECORDS Submitted by Judy Kilgore, 13 Feb 2002 The original ownership of this Bible is in question. The entire front is missing, including all of Genesis and part of Exodus. However, just before the New Testament begins, there is a Chronological Index, "...Of the Years and Times from Adam unto Christ, proved by the Scriptures, from the collation of divers authors..." The last paragraph says, "...Then the whole sum and number of years, from the beginning of the world unto the end of this year of our Lord God, 1850, are 5824 years, 6 months, and the said odd ten days," indicating that the Bible was printed in 1850. The first entry under Parents' Record is the birth of Joseph Joshua Payne on Jan. 20, 1854. On the same page are the births of Joseph's children and his own marriage. Joseph's daughter, Milie Ann Payne White, stated in 1975, that the handwriting was her father's. However, on the following pages, there are records of Boyds and Slones who were Joseph's in-laws. Some were born after Joseph's death, so we feel the Bible may have been passed to Joseph's wife's brother, Christopher Columbus Boyd, and/or to her sister, Melvina V. Boyd Slone. My mother, who has the Bible now, refers to it as "Uncle Lum's Bible." The original ownership, however, remains a mystery. Notations are not made under the appropriate categories, i.e., births, deaths and marriages, nor are they in any particular order. So I have organized them in chronological order for clarity. Family relationships are noted following the Bible entries. BIRTHS: Christopher C. BOYD, Louisa Elizabeth BOYD and Nancy Ann BOYD, were the children of Robert BOYD and Sarah Ann LeGUIN. Robert BOYD was the son of Hugh BOYD and Nancy --- (some researchers say HOPPER). Hugh BOYD was the son of Robert BOYD and Rosannah STEWART. This Boyd family migrated from Newberry Dist., SC, to Troup County (an area which later became Meriwether County), and on to Carroll County between 1850 and 1860. The elder Robert Boyd's will, made 8 Dec. 1840 and recorded 5 March 1847 in Meriwether County, bequeaths his land in "land lot No. two hundred and sixty nine in the ninth district of formerly Troup County now Meriwether County wherein David Boyd now lives, the above named land to be sold and equally divided between all my heirs ..." indicating that the family was there possibly as early as the late 1820s. Sarah Ann LeGUIN, is listed in the deaths, above, as Mrs. Sarah Ann Boyd, wife of Robert the younger. She is buried in Powell's Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery in Carroll County in a grave marked only, "S.A.B." Robert also is buried at Powell's Chapel. Christopher Columbus BOYD married Sarah George Hannah LAMBERT, daughter of George R. and Martha Arnold LAMBERT. They are also buried at Powell's Chapel in graves marked "C.C.B." and S.G.B." LaFayette Randolph BOYD, listed in the records above, was their son. Other children were Albert Hoyt, Martha Ann Lavonia, Charles Sumner, George Robert, Wiley Arthur, Columbus Braswell, Hugh Samuel, Edgar Elijah and La Nina Belle. Melvina V. BOYD, married David William SLONE (also seen as SLOAN) 30 Jan 1868 in Carroll Co. David was the son of Richard SLOAN and Rosannah Boyd. Melvina and David also are buried at Powell's Chapel. Melvina's grave says "M.V.S." Their children were: Sarah Florence, Ulysses Sidney, Lucy Louvana, William Fan, John, Emma Lourina, Georgia Ann, Walter R.G., Nancy Lucretia, Ollie, Florida Oregon, and Ida Mae. Louisa Elizabeth BOYD married Joseph Joshua PAYNE, son of William Jasper PAYNE and Mary (Polly) Ann WOOD(S). Louisa and Joseph are the parents of Coie O. Lonzo PAYNE (may have changed it later to Coy Alonzo), Robert Stephen PAYNE, Milie Ann PAYNE, Sarah Jane PAYNE, and Gooly Ross PAYNE. Graves at Powell's Chapel include Louisa (L.E.P.), Joseph (J.J.P.) and Gooly (G.R.P.) Coie O. Lonzo PAYNE married Annie Belle HYDE. They are buried at Carrollton City Cemetery. They had three children, Ralph (m. (1) Frances FOSTER and (2) Lucille Honea), Kathleen (m. Henley LOGAN), and Clestelle who died as an infant. Robert Stephen PAYNE married Delia (Dee) McPHERSON. They were later divorced and Bob remarried unknown. Burial place unknown. They had one son, Bruce. Milie Ann PAYNE married William J. WHITE 25 Feb. 1906 in Carroll Co. Burial places unknown. Their infant daughter, Dorothy Mae, is buried at Powell's Chapel. They had three other children: Christine, Louise and Guy. Sarah Jane PAYNE, married John Allen McWHORTER 19 Aug. 1906 in Carroll Co. He was the son of William Leroy McWHORTER and Eliza J. WREN. They had three children: Ruby Faye, Gladys Mae, and Marian Payne. Sarah and John are both buried at College Park Cemetery on Virginia Ave. near the Atlanta Airport. Marian Payne is my mother and the present owner of this Bible. Nancy Ann BOYD married George Washington GROCE 11 Dec 1879 in Carroll Co. He was the son of Melinda BOYD and Lewis Dudley GROCE. Nancy Ann and Melinda are buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Cedartown, Polk Co., GA. George is buried in Shawnee, Oklahoma. They had seven children, the last, a boy, died with Nancy in childbirth in 1901. Other children were: Curtis Lester, Robert Edgar, Ila Melissa, Aldora Gertrude, Oliver Russell, and Carl Columbus. Research on this family continues. I would appreciate any corrections and/or additions from family members or other researchers. ======================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
