Bell Biography of Martin Garrett Bell Martin Barrett was born in Meriwether Georgia on February, 1863, and raised in Meriwether/Carroll County Georgia. He was the son of James and Elizabeth Bell. He was the brother of Joseph Nathaniel, George Washington, James Jefferson, Nancy Elizabeth Bell Butler, Martha Frances Bell Swygert, John Thomas, and Charles P. Bell. He married Annie E. Griffin, the daughter of J.R Griffin and Sarah E. Martin. She was born on Jan, 1862. They married on Nov 4, 1884 in Carroll, Georgia. Martin and Annie had six children born to them in Carroll, Georgia. Anna Mae, on Sep, 1885, Lillie Frances, on Oct 1887, Thomas Jefferson B. born on Oct 12, 1889, Clifford Hambrick born on Jan 11, 1892, Nannie Ruth born July, 1894, and Charley Byrd born Jan 1, 1896. On Oct 12, 1898, Annie passed away. After Annie’s death, Martin petitioned the court to become administrator of her estate on April 9, 1900. The request would be granted in the May term of 1900. Next he would establish guardianship of his children. This being done because Annie’s share of her mother’s estate was passed onto the children. He obtained legal guardianship and their estate on December 10, 1900. He then petitioned the court for permission to sell the land that his children owned. The reason was to provide for the children to cloth and educate them. The court of Carroll County granted this request in early 1901. Martin cared for his children for the next several years and in late November of 1904, he became sick and died on December 11, 1904. Martin’s brother John Thomas and his wife Jodi cared for the children but both became ill in late 1905 and died in early 1906. George Washington Bell, Martin’s brother, was guardian of Clifford Hambrick and Charlie Byrd Bell. R.W. Adamson was guardian of Thomas Jefferson Bell, and W.H. Jackson was guardian of Lillie Frances Jackson Bell. Martin and Annie are buried beside Annie’s mother , Sarah E. Martin Griffin, at the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Carroll, Georgia. Only a rock stone indicated their headstone.
