Carter was born October 26, 1824 in Georgia. The records checked reveal that he was a farmer which was the chief occupation of his time. Those records also state that his father was born in South Carolina and his mother was born in Georgia. On December 2, 1846, he married Cynthia Matilda Davis who was born August 8, 1825 in Georgia (see Tallapoosa County, Alabama US GenWeb Marriages). The marriage took place in Tallapoosa County, Alabama and they continued to live in Tallapoosa County through 1860, they are not found on a census in 1870, but by 1880 they have moved to Heard County, Georgia and in 1900 are found living in Carroll County, Georgia. James J. Carter and his wife, Cynthia Matilda Davis, both passed away in Carroll County, Georgia and are both buried side by side at the Tallapoosa Perimitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Carroll County, Georgia. Matilda died November 29, 1903 and James J. lived almost three years longer, dying on September 6, 1906. Family of James J. Carter as proven by the following census records. You are urged to take caution as to his birth date and Civil War Service. At least three researchers, probably copied from one another instead of researching for facts) have him listed as born 1844 in Bowden, Carroll County, Georgia, the son of James J. and Matilda Carter. There is no evidence he was born in 1844 in Carroll County, but these census records prove he was born 1848 in Tallapoosa, Alabama. These "researchers" also list him as enlisting in the Civil War in Morgan County, Georgia where it was another James W. Carter who enlisted instead (see Walton and Morgan Counties Georgia U.S. GenWeb Military for details concerning the other James W. Carter). There is no evidence whatsoever that James W. was born in Carroll County, Georgia. It's true his parents had moved there by 1900 but there's absolutely no record in Carroll County of them before then. In fact, they married 1846 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama and the 1850, 1860 census and other records are consistent that they remained there at least through the mid 1860s. Furthermore, on the 1850 census above, James J. and Matilda state that their son was born in Alabama (not Georgia) and with him being only two years old, it's for certain they would have known where and when their first baby was born. The other James W. Carter was the son of John and Juda Carter of Walton County, Georgia. You may view the Civil War service of James W., son of James J. and Matilda, on the Tallapoosa County, Alabama U.S.GenWeb Military site.
