A Century of Life Appropriately Celebrated Last Sunday, Sept 6, a unique celebration occurred at Rocky Branch Church, in Beat 5. It was the public celebration of the hundredth birthday of the oldest man in Randolph County---Mr. Burill Nail. The scheme was the idea of Mr. G.O. Hill, and to him is largely due the credit for the successful execution. A large crowd estamated at from 800 to 1000, was present, including some of the most prominent people, notably Mr. Frank McMurray, who is over 92 years of age. The formal exercises were opened with music and Rev. T.C. Culpepper led in prayer. Mr. G.O. Hill presided. His opening remarks were happy and instsructive. He stated that Mr. Nail was born in Morgan County, Georgia, Sept 6, 1802. He was married to Betsy Henry in 1829 and to them was born 14 children, all of whom were reared except one. His oldest child is now age 72 years of age, his youngest age 45. He has numerous descendants. His father John Nail lived to be 104 years of age. Burrill Nail been living in Randolph County (AL) since 1866, and has ever been a good man and useful citizen. For the past several years he has been blind and partially deaf but can walk and talk as well as many men of fewer years. " Note: Above article shows photo of "Grandpa Nail, age 100". " Burrell Nail's father John Nail was born in Wilkes County, GA ca 1759. John Nail married a North Carolina Indian, Martha Teal....John and Martha were in Franklin County, GA by 1800, moved several times in central Georgia before settling in Henry County, GA by 1830. At least three children were born of this marriage: Burrill L. Nail (b. Sept 6, 1802; Mary Nail (b. 1810) and Martha Nail (b. 1820). It appears that John and Martha separated/divorced and she lived the remainder of her life (Martha) with her oldest son Burrill, dying sometime after 1870. John Nail took a new wife, Delilah, and was shown in the census for 1860 at age 99. " (Article from the "Heritage of Randolph County, AL", submitted by Don C. East of Lineville, AL in 1998.)
