New Bethel Church of Christ Roll Book Carroll Co, GA FOREWORD Among the list of members of the New Bethel church of Christ is Andrew C. Borden. Borden spent weeks away from his home in Carroll County, Georgia, spreading the Gospel. In the Friday, August 2, 1872 issue of the Carroll County times, he placed a notice above his name; "I will organize a church in the Baptist Church house, by their consent, Saturday next at eleven o'clock." From the roll book we find that indeed he began the meeting of the saints on the 3rd of August 1872. Among the families listed on this church roll book, is the Lenderman family. This family was first associated with the church when Alexander Campbell passed through Greenville, South Carolina on one of his missionary trips. The two prominent members of this family were Henry Lenderman and his son, Jacob Moses. Jacob Moses was unable to read or write until he was 18 years old. He began to study and became a school teacher. In later newspaper articles he is listed as Prof. J.M. Lenderman. Not only was he a faithful member of the New Bethel church of Christ, but he was well known in the community. It is not known when the church building was erected, but it was built close to Horsley Mill road. The school building was built close by. Following the death of Henry and Mary Lenderman, Jacob Moses, along with the Giles, Martin, and Warnick families, moved to Morgan, Marshall and Cullman Counties, Alabama. There the families continued to be faithful in the work of the church and were instrumental in starting a congregation in Morgan County called the Hebron church of Christ. The New Bethel congregation was so influenced by the Lenderman family that the common name around the community was "Lenderman's Chapel." We are thankful that the Lenderman family was so faithful in keeping church records so that we can have them to see the growth of the church in different areas. I am thankful to my uncle who shared this roll book with me. Margene Hemrick Black ORGANIZED 3 AUGUST 1872 These numbers are the pages of the original church roll book printed on pages 1-16.
