All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Kermit Smith kermit61@bellsouth.net November 1, 2007, 11:50 am Some Early History and Membership Roll before 1900 The first minutes of the present Tallapoosa Primitive Baptist Church as follows: "We,James Reeves,John G.Frye,Moses Kelley,James Majors,and John Wood, being called on by scattered brethen of the Baptist denomination near Carrollton to constitute them into a church in said place whose names are: James Dowdy,John Williams, Sarah Dowdy and Polly Chandler,waited on them and having read their letters and upon examination,found them orthodox and orderly in faith and practice,having constituted them into a church of the following faith." The name given at that time was Carrollton Baptist Church. The first conference was held at that time and James Dowdy, who was an ordained deacon, was named the first deacon of this new church, and Thomas Sanford was appointed clerk pro-tem. These minutes were dated 17 Jul 1830. The clerk immediately wrote to the Western Association of Baptists, asking that this new church be admitted. The next meeting was held on Saturday before the second Sunday in August.James Majors was selected as the first pastor, and the first Sabbath in each month was to be the meeting day. On 4 May 1833, the congregation voted by majority to move to the eleventh district, and in June 1833 the name was changed from the Carrollton Baptist Church to the Tallapoosa Baptist Church. During the meeting in June 1833,seven members were received by letters, and John N.Duke.as a member of the Concord Church in Troup County, was chosen as pastor for the following year.
