Application for Soldier's Pension dated 15 August 1919; George Washington Bell resides currently in Carroll County, Georgia; born 1846, Meriwether County, Georgia, son of James Bell & Elizabeth Caldwell; enlisted in Company E, 1st Georgia Reserves, infantry, date March or April 1864, Greenville, Meriwether County, Georgia; service: from date of enlistment until April 13, 1865; When and where was your company: April 1865 at either Albany or Macon; George Washington Bell was paroled at Griffin, Georgia; Were you present when Company discharged: No; Where were you: I had been given a 30 days furlough to carry the body of Warren Pullen, one of my comrades, home, and when on my way back I only got as far as Griffin and learned of the discharge of my command, and was later paroled at Griffin; Where was your command when you left it: Andersonville, Georgia; When did you leave the command: In March 1865; For what cause: Furloughed to carry body of comrade home; By whose authority did you leave: My recollection is that Colonel Fannin issued my furlough; How long was leave granted: 30 days; Why did you not return to your command after leave expired: Was on my way back when I was notified that my command had been discharged; Were you captured during war: No; Questions for Witness as to Service 4 September 1919: R.K. Brandenburg confirmed information listed above and noted "I was a member of the same company and regiment, enlisted at the same time with him, served with him and came out with him at the close of the war." When and where was his command surrendered: April 1865 at Albany, Georgia, discharged but included in Johnson's surrender; Brandenburg was personally present at the time of the surrender; Confederate Reserves [Fannin's] Georgia, G.W. Bell, private, Company E, 1 Reb's GA Reserves Company Muster Roll on April 28, 1864, when mustered into the service of the Confederate States, dated Atlanta, Georgia, April 28, 1864 by Captain W.L. Hubbard for the war. Age: 17, height 5' 8", light complexion, blue eyes, light hair, occupation farmer. George W. Bell died in Bremen, Georgia on May 21, 1928 of intestinal toxemia and was buried in the City Cemetery on May 22, 1928. Samuel died on September 26, 1911. "Jack" died on May 21, 1920. They are buried side by side in the Greenville Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Peavy, John J.W.P. - Died while on duty at Andersonville Prison and buried in Americus, GA in Oak Grove Cemetery- grave # 84. (No one on my roster list matches these initials perfectly so I have to assume that perhaps this guard was John Peavy until I can investigate further. There are quite a number of men in this company whose first and 2nd initials were "J.W." so the possibility exists that perhaps he might have had 3 given names.
