James and Eatha left Campbell Co., Ga about 1855 and moved to Cleburne County, Al. James enlisted in Carroll Co., Ga on the 5th of May 1862, with the 56th Georgia Infantry, Co. B of the Confederate Army. On 30th of April 1863 his was on the roll in Lauderdale, MS at the General Hospital as a patient. No other entries are documented on him till his was captured near Chattahoochie, Ga by Maj. Gen W.T. Sherman and forwarded to Capt. S. E. Jones, where he was taken to Nashville, TN. and noted on the roll there on 13 July 1864. On the 14th of July 1864 he was sent to Camp Douglas at Chicago, IL. and was received on there roster on the 16th of July 1864. On 30 Dec 1864 he died of Pleursey and was buried in Grave # 365 at Brook2, Chicago City Cemetery*. * These graves were later moved by the Federal Government about 20 miles south of the Camp Douglas site, at government purchased property for Oak Woods Cemetery. Eatha Langley filed for her husband's pension in Cleburne County, Al., in August of 1887, July 1889, and July 1891. She indicates on this pension record that James came to his death from disease contacted while in service of the Conferate Army. Note ** James Wythe Langley is listed as James Y.
