INDIAN WARS Claim of Widow for Pension State of Georgia, County of Carroll December 22, 1892 On this 22nd day of December, one thousand eight hundred and ninety two, personally appeared before a Justice of the Peace within and for the county and state aforesaid, Jerusha Chandler, aged 94 years, a resident of Carroll county in the state of Georgia, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow of Ambrose Chandler, deceased, who was the identical person who served under the name of Ambrose Chandler, as a private in the Company commanded by Captain Cleveland in the Regiment of Ga. Mil., commanded by Col. Lurk? (she thinks) in the Cherokee Indian War; that her husband enlisted at Franklin Co. Ga, Carnesville she thinks, on or about the 15th day of May 1838 for the term of three months and was discharged at New Town ?, she thinks; that he was not otherwise in the military or naval service of the United States. That at the time of entering the service claimed for, her said husband was 20 or 25 years of age, five feet 11 inches in height, with dark gray eyes, black hair and dark complexion, and by occupation a Farmer and ??; that he was born in the county of Unknown, in the state of North Carolina. That after leaving the service, he resided at Franklin Co. Ga and Carroll Co. Ga., 23 years. That she was married to him on the 4th day of May 1827 at Franklin Co. Ga., by Charles Jenkins, Justice of the Peace, under the name of Jerusha White; that he had not been previously married to anyone and that she had not been previously married to anyone. That he said husband died at Carroll Co. Ga on the 9th day of April 1868, being, she supposes about sixty some years old at his death.; that she has not since remarried. That she has not heretofore made application for pension; that she has not made application for bounty land. That she is a citizen of the United States and makes this application for the purpose of obtaining a pension under the provisions o the Act approved July 27, 1892 and hereby appoints Merrill & Cole of Carrollton, Georgia her true and lawful attorney. That her post office address is Waco, County of Haralson, State of Georgia; send my mail to Carrollton, Ga. in care of Merrill & Cole. Claimant is old and can't remember the commissioned officers names. She thinks this may be had in the records of her husband's service. Also personally appeared, W. Johnson, aged 60 years, residing in Carroll Co. Ga, and Joseph G. King, aged 63 years, residing in Carroll Co. Ga., who, being duly sworn, say that they have known the said Jerusha Chandler for 42 years, and 43 years, respectively; that they were present and saw her sign her name to the foregoing declaration; that they have every reason to believe and do believe from the appearance of said claimant and from their personal acquaintance with her, that she is the identical person she represents herself to be. And they further say that they are satisfied that she is the person who was the wife of Ambrose Chandler, who rendered the service alleged in the above application, in the company of Captain Cleveland in the regiment of Col Lurk? in the Cherokee Indian War, by the following facts and circumstances: We knew the soldier and his wife the claimant well for a long time before his death. We know that they were reputed to be husband and wife up to the time he died which occurred about the 9th day of April 1868 or 67. We know he is dead because we lived in the neighborhood. We know that the claimant is still his widow because we are living near her and have been ever since her husband's death, within two miles of her and she has not remarried or we would have known it. In the matter of the pension application of Jerusha Chandler, widow of Ambrose Chandler Gentlemen: The above claimant should be advised that her husband's name is not found on the roll of Captain Cleveland's Company, Ga., Vols. and that no further action can be taken in this case until the proof of service of the soldier is furnished. Mos??, Carrollton, Ga. ---- Nov. 17, 1894 To: Postmaster, Carrollton, Ga. From: Commissioner of Pensions, Washington, D.C. Sir, This office is advised that Mrs. Jerusha Chandler, a former resident of your place is dead. Please state on the back of this letter whether the report is true, and return under cover of the enclosed envelope. Respectfully, Wm. Lochren, Commissioner Written on back of the letter: # 3551, Widow, Jerusha Chandler She has gone to the realms of the far away land with a "crown on her head and a heart in her hand". No sorrow, no trouble, no afflictions or devil can ever molest her. God bless her, she's dead. G.W. Newell, Carroll, Ga.. The above named claimant has gone to that place from which it is said no one can return, with a crown on her head and a heart in her hand. A recognized citizen of the fair and better land, she no longer cares for "Uncle Sam's gold. So it only remains for her friends to be told that her claim is rejected and filed with "old lore", for the good old lady, she needs it no more.
