While looking out for the rabbit through a fence corner, and partially bending over, the butt of the gun struck the ground and was discharged, the muzzle at the time being under and very near his left shoulder. The coins must have been buried a long time, as nearly all the figures are effuced, but supposed to be of British origin. ------ COWETA COUNTY News We publish this week the following letter from "Ripples", our Coweta county correspondent, which will be of sad interest to his many friends: "We have just received a letter from Texas, which brings us the painful intelligence of the death of our youngest then living brother, which occurred on the 3rd of May 1881. We learn that he had started down to clear out his well which was overcharged with gas. After he had gone down about ten feet, he hallooed to those above in charge of the windlass to draw him back, but before they could reverse the motion of the windlass, he was overpowered and fell a distance of 40 feet, breaking his neck. "Tis sad to think of, that it makes us weep as we pen these lines. He left a wife and seven little children, an aged father and five loving brothers, to mourn his untimely death. The popping and roaring of the fire woke up his son Ben, who with some difficulty got out of his room through the smoke and woke up the rest of the family, but it was too late to save the house; the flames having already made considerable headway. Mr. Wager has a large family and a heavy crop on hand, and his loss is about $1200. which will be hard to replace. It was thought by them that the house was set on fire by some one. Mr. W. lives about one mile west of this place. ------ Virgil Brantley put a rope around his waist and went down in Mr. Wager's well to clean out the sticks which had fallen in when the well shelter burned down. As soon as he reached the bottom he found, that on account of gas or something, he could not remain and called out for those above to pull him out, and as they pulled him out, he lost the use of himself and his head occasionally struck the sides of the well, and when he reached the top of the well, his life was almost extinct; however he recovered somewhat in about ten minutes but is still in a critical condition. ------ LIBEL FOR DIVORCE State of Georgia, Carroll County Superior Court April Term 1881 Joseph J. Davenport of Campbell county, was accidentally drowned in Longino's mill pond six miles below Palmetton on Saturday the 11th inst. ----- From The Rome Courier - - - We received the sad intelligence of the drowning of a young wife and her husband in Roger's Mill pond on Euharlce creek near Stilesboro in Bartow County, Ga. It appears that Mrs. Middleton, wife of Mr. John Middleton, crossed over the mill pond on a small ferry boat on Monday afternoon to visit a neighbor, as she had been in the habit of doing since her residence in the neighborhood, and that her husband went over later in the evening to escort her home. They got to the ferry boat about 8 o'clock to start home, the husband pulling the boat over by a rope that was stretched across the pond. When they had gone about half way, the rope unfortunately struck Mrs. Middleton, throwing her into the water. She immediately sunk and before rising to the surface, her husband jumped in to rescue her, but instead of saving his wife, he was carried to the bottom and both were drowned. We have never been called upon to pen a sadder occurrence than this, for these two happy people were married only four months ago, and had just fairly launched out upon the sea of life. Their bodies were recovered soon after the drowning and when found, the husband's arms were clasped lovingly around the form of his young wife. ------- Mr. John C. She got up as usual on Sunday morning and got breakfast for the family, and after eating, went about her domestic duties.
