LUCY PRESTLY In memory of Mrs. Lucy Prestly, better known by all as Grandma Prestly, who died on the 20th inst. at the residence of Mr. D.W. Sims, where for many years she had made her home with her granddaughter, Mrs. Sims. The deceased was born in Buckingham county, Virginia on May 20th, 1790. Her father Jas. Brown moved with his family to Elbert county, Georgia when she was an infant, hence her life reaching back through nearly a century, was spent in Georgia. When in her 25th year she was married to Elijah Prestly, whom she long survived. It has been the privilege of the writer to converse with her often and to listen with interest to her as she talked of the early history of the great Republic, speaking from the treasures of a retentive memory reaching far back to the days of Adams, Jefferson and others whose names gild the pages of history. But while she delighted to talk of olden times, still greater was her delight to speak of religion, which seemed to be her chief concern, and to relate her christian experience, dating bck to the first Sunday in June, 1809, the day she was baptized and united with the Baptist church at Falling Creek, Elbert county, Ga. She was then in her 20th year of her age and though more than three score and ten years have passed, still that day with all its joys seemed as fresh in her memory as if it has been but yesterday, and from that day to the close of her life, her soul feasted upon the divine blessing, bearing constant testimony to the reality of her christian religion. She expressed at all times but one desire for herself; that was to depart and be with Christ, saying "whenever it is his will to call for me, I am ready". And finally when the summons came, without apparent pain or struggle, she fell asleep, thus closing a life of 92 years and 1 month, full of hope in Jesus. The bereaved family and relatives have not only the warmest sympathy of the many friends, but also the divine assurance that "blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." ------- LOCAL News Miss Beulah Gay of Senoia is visiting Major Roop's family. His remains were carried to Bethel church on the 17th and after the funeral services, which were conducted by Elder J.M.D. Stallings, his body was assigned to mother dust. The subject of this notice was born in Johnson county, North Carolina on the 23rd of January 1817 and when about 7 years of age, moved with his parents to Monroe county, Georgia where he lived, until he united with Mary C. Thaxton in the holy bonds of matrimony, which was on the 12th day of October 1837. A short time after they married they moved to Tennessee, until 1858 when he moved to his county. After moving to this county he united to Bethel church and remained a member of it until Abiline church was constituted, it being convenient, and he joined there. The writer has been acquainatd with him for 20 years and I never heard him speak evil of anyone or anyone speak evil of him. Was with him in his last illness and found him submissive to the will of the Lord and ready to die. He leaves a small family and many friends to mourn his loss, to whom we extend our sincere sympathies in their bereavement. J.M. Muse, Jr. ------ SOLDIER'S RETURN A Post- Appeal representative learned the following particulars in Douglasville last Saturday: George Moss went to the late civil war from the Chestnut Log district in Campbell county, Georgia. He left many relatives and friends and they heard and have believed that he was killed in the Army. News of the death of soldiers during the War came so thick and fast that mourning almost ceased, unless among the immediate family. The sister and brother-in-law of George Moss, as well as other relatives and friends, ceased mourning for him seventeen years ago. About three weeks ago, however, having left a home he had found in "old Virginia", he knocked at the door of his sister near Douglasville and was welcomed back to life and home again. He is now an old bachelor and will remain in the midst of the scenes of his youth, having fought out a hard time in the war, and in the peace in Virginia. During all that time he had never written home. He is in about the same circumstances as when he departed. ------- File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/carroll/newspapers/newspape2191gnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ File size: 10.6 Kb
