Meigs, a printer formerly connected with The Times and well known to most of our readers, was accidentally killed in Atlanta where he had been living for the past five or six years, on Thursday afternoon of last week, by being ran over by the cars. The sudden death of Mr. Meigs will be a shock to his many friends in this community, where he had lived several years, and where he was respected as a hard working, honest, christian man. The following account of the tragic event is taken from The Atlanta Constitution of last Friday: About ten o'clock he left home in fine spirits and repaired to the home of his daughter in the western portion of the city, where he remained until about 1 o'clock, when he started for his home. His route was shortened by traveling the railroad track and his journey was half finished when the accident occurred. Just before reaching the Forsyth street crossing he heard an engine coming up behind him and looking back saw a switch engine approaching at a rapid rate. When this engine was first seen it was close upon him, and Mr. Meigs jumped from the track without looking back and in doing so, stepped directly in front of the engine drawing the passenger train, which was on an adjacent track. As his feet struck the ground, Mr. Meigs discovered his new danger and tried to save himself, but was not quick enough. The engine struck him with such force that he was knocked down but in falling, he managed to throw his body clear off the track and escaped instant death, but the wheels of the engine passed over both of his legs, crushing them to splinters. The accicdent was witnessed by many persons, who ran to the injured man's assistance, and by whom he was placed on a stretcher and carried to Dr. Westmoreland's office, where it was ascertained that both limbs were so badly mutilated that amputation would be necessary. After he was given an anesthetic, both limbs were amputated by Dr. Westmoreland but his system was so completely shocked that he continued to sink gradually, until 6:30 o'clock in the evening, when he died. Mr. Meigs was about fifty years of age and was sober, industrious and a christian. He leaves a wife and several children. HIs life was insured in the Knights of Honor for $2000. ------ NEIGHBORHOOD News Miss Burnie Combs of Newnan died recently of typhoid fever. ---- CURTIS Community News Mr. A. His funeral was preached the next day at New Lebanon church by Rev. J.M.D. Stallings, from Hebrews 9th chapter and 27th verse, after which his remains were interred int he cemetery at that place. Willie was a noble, generous and affectionate child, beloved by all who knew him, and ever ready to do an act of kindness. He was submissive and obedient, especially to his fond parents, whom he so dearly loved and honored and whose precepts and examples he so much loved to imitate. In school he was obedient to his teacher, attentive to his books, always standing ahead in his classes. To his schoolmates he was kind and obliging, never did say anything he thought would wound their feelings, but ever ready to do them an act of kindness. Little Willie is gone. He will be seen no more in his accustomed place, his voice will be heard no more on earth, yet we feel assured that he is with the blessed Savior who said " suffer little children to come unto me and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of heaven." The family has the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement. May they remember that the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh. His Teacher. ----- File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/carroll/newspapers/newspape2199gnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ File size: 10.6 Kb
