Anderson died Sunday night the 19th of December. ---- NEIGHBORHOOD News The Franklin News announces the death on Sunday the 16th inst. of Robt. H. Boggus. Mr. Boggus was the oldest citizen of Franklin. He was for several terms Sheriff of Heard county. He was much afflicted for three or four years and has often expressed his submission to the will of the Master. ----- The Franklin News announces the death of Mrs. Eva Miller, the wife of Mr. Willis Miller. She was the daughter of Major Gillespie, and a sister to Rev. T.A. Gillespie, deceased, who for some years published and edited the Franklin News. Mrs. Miller was a victim of the typhoid malarial fever, which has during the last two years made so many untimely graves in Heard county and it is sad to think that so large a number of the victims have been those whose lifes had but just begun. ----- A MAN SHOT Last Friday evening, Robt. M. Huckeba was shot and severely wounded by John Smith of Heard county. The shooting was done in this county from the foot of Black Jack mountain. The circumstances as related to our informant were as follows: Huckeba, in company with Esq. J.W. Jones was in the woods getting out rock for a hearth or chimney. They had loaded their wagon and were going to look for other rock that some one had told them about, when they were joined by Mr. J.T. Smith, constable of New Mexico district and Mr. J.K.P. Craven who came up with them. While talking with these gentlemen, John Smith rode up and speaking to Craven and J.T. Smith, dismounted and handed his bridle rein to one of them. He then stepped back to the side of his horse, the animal standing between him and Huckeba and while appearing to be adjusting his saddle blanket, cocked his gun and without speaking to Huckeba or giving any warning, stepped from behind the horse and fired on him. Huckeba started to run and Smith fired his second barrel, the shot taking effect in the right shoulder, arm and back and one the head behind the right ear. Huckeba cried out " Stop, he has killed me", but continued to run until he passed out of sight. Esq. Jones followed him at once, expecting to find him dead. After looking for him through the woods for nearly an hour, he started to get assistance and meeting someone, was informed that the wounded man got to W.G. Huckeba's. Dr. Aderhold was called and examined and dressed the wounds, which our informant thinks the doctor does not believe necessarily fatal. One duck shot was extracted from the left arm. Our information is furnished by a gentleman who witnessed the affair. As to the cause leading up to the tragedy, little is known. It will be remembered that on the 24th of December 1876, just seven years ago, John Craven was killed at a house on the premises of W.G. Huckeba in Heard county. John Smith, who was present at the fight in which Craven is supposed to have received the wounds of which he died from, was charged with the crime and Robt. M. Huckeba, who was also present, was held as a witness in the trial of Smith. If we remember rightly, Smith was acquitted of the charge. It is surmised that the assault on Huckeba relates back in some way to the old case. But it is only surmise. ----- LOCAL News Married on the evening of the 27th of Dec. at the residence of the bride's father at Whitesburg, Miss Mollie Barnett to Mr. J.G.W. Lasseter, the Rev. W.W.
