Heflin, Cleburne County, Alabama NEWSPAPER Issue of Thursday, FEBRUARY 27, 1930 CLEBURNE COUPLE AMONG SOUTH'S OLDEST, CLAIMED Cleburne county believes it has one of the oldest living married couples in Alabama or the South in the persons of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Scott, of the Friendship community, Route 1, Muscadine. Uncle John and Aunt Sarah were married in 1867. She was Sarah Isabella Brown of Muscadine. Uncle John enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861 and served in the Thirtieth Georgia Infantry under Capt. Head of Buchanan, Ga., but later he was transferred to the Forty-Eighth Alabama Infantry under Capt. John W. Wigginton. He was seriously wounded in the second battle of Manasses and never returned to his company. Uncle John was born in Carroll county, Ga. and came with his parents to this county in 1849. Of five living children, Judge V. E. Scott of Friendship is the eldest. The couple have 30 grandchildren and 61 great grandchildren living. Mr. Scott is in his 91st year and Mrs. Scott in her 89th.
