LUGENE LEE WILLIAMSON, 88, OF CARROLLTON, DIED DEC. 31, 2001 AT CARROLL MANOR. MRS. WILLIAMSON WAS BORN MAY 6, 1913 IN CARROLL COUNTY, DAUGHTER OF THE LATE OLIN ELI LEE AND MAGGIE LEE. TUESDAY, January 15, 2002 Sara Grace Burnett, 83, of 2455 Oak Grove Church Road, Carrollton, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2002. Miss Burnett was born in Carroll County on Oct 16, 1918, daughter of the late James Albert Burnett and Berlie Wiggins Burnett. She was a retired Assistant Cashier in the Commercial Lending Department of West Georgia National Bank, where she was employed for almost 24 years. Prior to her position at the bank, she was employed as a bookkeeper for Groover-Smith Furniture Company. She was a member of the Carrollton First United Methodist Church where she had been very active, a member of the Allie Beall Sunday School Class, Adult Friendship Class, and Women Of The Church. She had served as Treasurer for the church and on various committees. Survivors include a number of cousins and friends. Funeral services were conducted Jan. 14 at 3 p.m. at the Carrollton First United Methodist Church with Dr. Jimmy Thurman and Dr. William Holt officiating. Pallbearers were Charlie Story, Jerry Strickland, Phil Stamps, Richard Duncan, E.H. Hearn, Harold Borders, Bobby Brown and Leighton Alston. Employees, officers and Board of Directors of West Georgia National Bank formed an honorary escort. Interment followed in the Carrollton City Cemetery. Martin and Hightower Heritage Chapel, Carrollton. Nettie Shell Dennis of Atlanta, died Jan. 13, 2002. Delbert Donald Frazee Jr., of Heflin, Ala., died Jan. 8, 2002, following an extended illness. He was born Aug. 24, 1931 in Detroit, Mich. He served in the military where he met his wife, Edith Nell Smith, to whom he was married on June 2, 1952. Survivors include his wife, Edith Nell; son, Delbert Donald Frazee III; six daughters, Deborah Doll; Mary Lea Folsom, Del Ann Frazee, Dianne Kuyndall, Elaine Lee and Connie Burke; 24 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Delbert Donald Frazee Sr. and Dixie Whitlock Frazee and an infant daughter Donna Sue Frazee. Funeral services were held Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. at Hepsabah Baptist Church in Heflin, Ala. with Rev. Donald Burke officiating. Interment followed in the Hepsabah Cemetery in Heflin, Ala. Mrs. Garner was born April 5, 1926 in Haralson County, daughter of the late William Henry and Elizabeth Kelly. Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Horace Winfred Garner. She was a Baptist. Survivors include two sons, Horace and Peggy Garner of Douglasville and Johnny Garber of Mableton; four sisters, Jewell Cannon of Felton, Ruby Cosby of Rockmart, Myrtle Bryant of Rockmart and Maude Barkwell of Morrow; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted today, Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. at J. Allen Couch Funeral Home in Douglasville with Rev. Roy Smith officiating. Interment will follow in the Georgia Memorial Park in Marietta. Visitation will be today from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour. Sharon Sue Matney Hawkins, 53, of Buchanan died Jan. 12, 2002. She was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include daughters, Tessa Sutton of Muscadine, Ala., Sharon Rakestraw and Tabitha Gibbs, both of Buchanan; son, Lonnie Hawkins Jr. of Rockmart; six grandchildren; sisters, Jan Smith of Canton Shelley Hardy and Karen Davis, both of Lithia Springs; brother, Rickey Davis of Villa Rica and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, Robert and Rodney Matney and sister, Stacey Davis Gurley. C.M. “Bud” Jordan, 81, of 673 Shoemake Road, Carrollton, died Jan. 13, 2002 following an extended illness. Mr. Jordon was born Oct. 12, 1920 in Carroll County, son of the late James Marion Jordan and Sally Watson Phillips Jordan. He was a retired employee of the Southwire Co. and a member of Happy Hill Baptist Church. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Fay Shoemake Jordan; two brothers, William “Bill” Jordan and Carl Jordan; and a sister, Selto Newborn. Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda and Ray Cramer and Debra Walker, all of Carrollton; one son and daughter-in-law, Samuel L. and Shirley Jordan of Danielsville; one sister, Florence Folds of Newnan; two brothers, Harold Jordan and Dalton Jordon, both of Newnan; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren. Interment will follow in the Happy Hill Baptist Church cemetery. Mary Elizabeth Bradley Ponder, 77, of Tunnel Hill, died Jan. 12, 2002 at the Quinton Memorial Health Care Center. Mrs. Ponder was born Feb. 16, 1924 in Gilmer County. Her parents, John and Julia Surprise Bradley died when Mary was a very young child and she was raised by the late Jim and Ella Cantrell. She was also preceded in death by he husband, Tom Ponder and a daughter, Edna Paige. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Carlie and Joan Ponder and Larry Ponder, all of Tunnel Hill; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Paul Weeks of Dalton, Sybil and Bill Harris of Franklin, Ky., Caroline Ledford of Carrollton and Winfred Paige of Dalton.; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Annie Jane Langley Smith, 89, of 1765 Temple Avenue, College Park, died Jan. 12, 2002. A native of Carroll County, she was born Feb. 3, 1912, daughter of the late James Thomas Langley and Emma Elizabeth Strickland Langley. Mrs. Smith was a retired factory worker with the textile industry and of the Baptist faith. Survivors include a son, William Thomas Brooks of Chicago, Ill.;four grandchildren; sister, Addie Jewell Sadler of College Park and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 16 at 3 p.m. at the chapel of Almon Funeral Home with Rev. Keith Hancock officiating. Interment will follow in the Sargent Cemetery. Mrs. Warner, a native of Gibson County, Ind., was born Oct. 27, 1934, daughter of the late Charles Dillon and Mary Miller Dillon. She was a homemaker and a member of the Dorsett Shoals Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Donald Warner; stepson, Charles Garrett of Washington, Ind.; son, James Warner of Carrollton; daughters, Karen Austin of Roopville and Susie Armstrong of Bedford, Ind.; brother, Jack Dillon of Hazelton, Ind.; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchilderm. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Dillon. Funeral services were conducted Jan. 14 at 4 p.m. at the chapel of Almon Funeral Home with pastor Tom Kaplan officiating. Interment followed in the Cresthaven Cemetery in Bedford, Ind. Jean Penfield Stewart, 73, of 116 South St., Carrollton, died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002. Mrs. Stewart was a native of Bartow County and was born Feb. 2, 1928, daughter of the late E.M. Penfield and Lena Hooker Penfield. She was a retired school teacher having taught in the Carrollton City School System, West Georgia College, and helped adults get their General Education Diplomas. She was a member of the Carrollton Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her husband, Robert L. Stewart Sr.; sons and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Gloria Stewart and Jimmy and Cathy Stewart , all of Carrollton; daughter and son-in-law, Jane S. and Ryan Reynolds of Lilburn; grandchildren, Amanda Stewart, Shane Miles, Andi Stewart, Robyn Renyolds, Russ Reynolds, and Garrett Reynolds; bother, Bill Penfield; sisters, Lucy Elrod and Marion Smith, all of Adairsville and several nieces and nephews. WEDNESDAY, January 16, 2002 William James `Jim` Gilmer, 70, of 233 Farmington Trace, Carrollton, passed away Monday, Jan. 14, 2002 at his residence. Mr. Gilmer was born May 15, 1931 in Polk County, Ga., son of the late William John Gilmerr and Mary Elizabeth Webb Gilmer. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by the mother who raised him, Irma Lee Gilmer. He was a graduate of the University of Georgia, a U.S. Army veteran holding the rank of Lieutenant having served in the Korean Conflict, and remained extremely patriotic. He retired from the Hubbard Company in 1996 following 42 years of service and was a member of the Carrollton First United Methodist Church. Mr. Gilmer had an immense love of baseball and after moving back to Georgia enjoyed cheering for the Braves. Survivors include four children, Lee R. and Linda Gilmer of Houston, Texas, Laurel Ann and Tom Thomas of Bartlesville, Ok.; Nadine and Dennis Boyd of Chesterfield, Mo. and Mary Elizabeth and Larry Lasley of Garden City, Kan.; one brother, John Gilmer of Guyton, Ga.; and seven grandchildren, Brian and Melanie Gilmer, Timothy, David, Shannon and Jonathan Thomas and Natalie Boyd. Memorial services will be conducted Friday, Jan. 18 at 11 a.m. at Martin and Hightower Heritage Chapel with Dr. Jimmy Thurman officiating. Clara Lucille Pentecost, 100, of Carrollton, died Monday, Jan. 14, 2002. Mrs. Pentecost, a native of Carroll County, was born Jan. 8, 1902, the daughter of the late George Edward Pentecost and Annie Stallings Pentecost. She graduated from Martha Berry College and worked at the school before returning to Carrollton. Mrs. Pentecost was a sales clerk for Griffin's Department Store for a number of years and was a member of the Roopville Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Bettye P. Cosper of Carrollton; grandchildren, Glenda and Danny Brannon of Douglasville, Chuck Cosper of Carrollton, Andy Cosper of Altamonte Springs, Fla., Ricki Pruitt of Bremen, Jody Pruitt of Bremen and Vick Trovillion of Maitland, Fla.; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Evelyn Veal Willson, 82, of Roopville, passed away Jan. 13, 2002 at Pine Knoll Nursing Home in Carrollton following a massive stroke on Christmas morning. Mrs Willson was a native of Carrollton, born Aug. 1, 1919 , daughter of the late Joe L. Veal and Myrtle Tatum. She was a member of the first United Methodist Church of Carrollton, and Adult Fellowship Sunday School class. Mrs. Willson graduated from Carrollton High School and GSCW with a degree in business education. Following graduation she taught business education courses at Cuselta High School. She was also the Cuselta girls basketball coach. During the war years, she worked at Southeastern Motor Lines. While married she was a devoted wife and mother. For many years she served as a Brownie leader and a room mother, Later in life, she was a supply teacher at DeKalb Junior college in Stone Mountain. Mrs. Willson was preceded in death by her parents, Joe L. Veal and Myrtle Tatum Veal; brothers, Robert L. Veal and William Joe Veal and a niece, Carole Wilson Gault. BRADLEY died Jan. 23, 2002 after a brief illness. She will be sorely missed by her friends, colleagues, and students. Dr. Bradley was born Sept. 10, 1946, in Bremen, Ga., the daughter of J.R, Bradley and Jane Bradley. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1967 from the University of Georgia, and taught French and History at Athens High School and Carrollton High School for the following ten years. She earned a Ph.D. In Medieval European History from Emory University, Atlanta, GA in 1983. In 1982 she began her long and fruitful teaching career at Auburn University in Montgomery, Al. She will be remembered for the breath of her knowledge, for the passion with which She shared the knowledge, and for her tremendous generosity. In addition to teaching at AUM, she was a frequent guest at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival's Theatre in the Mind program. She was awarded AUM's highest teaching honor, the Distinguished Teaching Professorship, in 1997. At the time of hear death she was serving as Chair of AUM's Department of History. She was a former member of the Junior Women's Club of Carrollton, a past district president of the Junior Woman's Club of Georgia and was active in the Democratic Party. For a number of years Mrs. Ware was active in the PTA, the Band Boosters Club and the Athletic Boosters Club at Central High School in Carrollton. Mr. Eaves was born in Haralson County on Feb. 26, 1913, son of the late David Elonza Eaves and the late Mrs. Cora Beavers Eaves. HE WAS A VETERAN OF THE U.S. NAVY and was retired from the Arrow Shirt Co. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Gardner Eaves.
