July 5, 2001 Obits Ms. Matilda DAVIS, 89, of Roanoke, Ala., formerly of Carrollton, died Saturday, June 31, 2001. Ms. Davis was born May 20, 1912, in Carroll County, daughter of the late James and Mattie Gibson Davis. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Gennie Mae Ackey, and several other relatives. Funeral services will be Friday, July 6, at 2 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home in Carrollton with the Rev. Edward Dunson officiating. Burial will follow in the King Street City Cemetery in Carrollton. Mrs. Irene Maddox GILMER, 66, of Rockmart died Monday, July 2, 2001. Mrs. Gilmer was born in Douglas County on November 13, 1934, daughter of the late Sherman Maddox and the late Mrs. Essie Williams Maddox. She was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Hubert S. Gilmer; daughter, Mrs. Wanda McElroy of Bremen; sons, Herbert J. Gilmer, Kenny E. Gilmer, Clarence L. Gilmer, David P. Gilmer, Jackie L. Gilmer, and Ricky N. Gilmer, all of Rockmart and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services will be today, July 5, at 2 p.m. at Hutchenson’s Memorial Chapel in Buchanan with the Rev. Donald Mabe officiating. Music will be by Harold McWhorter. Burial will follow in the Friendship Baptist Church cemetery in New Georgia community. George HARRIS, 52, of 761 Wesley Chapel Road, Villa Rica, died Sunday, July 1, 2001. Mr. Harris was born May 10, 1949, in Paulding County, son of the late Carvin (Buck) and Bernese Harris. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Juanita Campbell. He is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Taffeny and Terry Johnson of Villa Rica and Jamillah Harris of Douglasville; sons and daughter-in-law, Brian and Tisha Harris of Douglasville, and Alex Harris of Macon; brothers and sisters-in-law, Otis and Terry Harris of Merrillville, Ind., and John and Elma Harris of Villa Rica; sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley and Earl Sells, Iva and Melvin Gillespie, all of Gary, Ind., Jacqueln Jean and Edwin Marie of Portland, Ore., Yvonne and Curtis Rodgers of St. Charles, Mo.; two grandchildren, several other relatives. Funeral services will be Friday, July 6, at 2 p.m. at Mt. Prospect Baptist Church in villa Rica with the Rev. Potts officiating. Walker Funeral Home, Carrollton. John HERRING, 74, of Woodland, Ala., died Tuesday, July 3, 2001. Mr. Herring was born September 10, 1926, in woodland, son of the late Mr. & Mrs. John and Pauline Herring. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two infant children; a granddaughter; sisters, Reba Stephens, Julia Wiggs, Virginia Holloway, Ethel Dallas and Mable Garrett; brothers, King Herring, R.C. Madden and Garfield Herring. He is survived by his wife, Liller B. Herring; daughters and sons-in-law, Harriet and Mark Holloway of Woodland, Diane and James Hagan of Albany; sons and daughters-in-law, Johnnie Mack and Rita Herring of Roopville, Tim and Cynthia Herring of Atlanta, Dwight and Mary Herring and Kenneth Herring of Woodland; 11 grandchildren; sisters and brother- in-law, Wyline Stephens of Columbus, Ohio, Queenie Mae Boyd of Bowdon and Betty and Elvin Henson of Heflin, Ala.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Roy and Lemmeree Herring and Barfield Herring of Bowdon, Bennie and Mary Herring and Stell Herring of Woodland, Evelyn Herring, Pearlie Holloway , Mardean Rivers, Laura Smith, Lorea Lester and Louise smith; several other relatives. Funeral services will be Friday, July 6, at 11 a.m. Georgia time at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church in Woodland with Pastor Lawrence Watts officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Doris Irene Carter PHILLIPS, 76, of Dallas Road, Villa Rica, Died Tuesday, July 3, 2001. Mrs. Phillips was born April 25, 1925, in Carroll County, daughter of the late Thomas Earnest Carter and the late Mrs. Myrtie Buford Vines Carter. She was a member of the Bethany Christian church in Carroll County and was a retired string knitter with the Villa Rica Hosiery Mills for 43 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilber Phillips, and brother, Thomas Murphy Carter. She is survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be Friday July 6, at 2 p.m. at Bethany Christian Church with Minister Allen Howard officiating. The body will lie in state at the church from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour. Music will be by Bill and Juanita Belk. Burial will follow in the Bethany Cemetery.
