WILSON WAS BORN IN HEARD COUNTY ON NOV. 25, 1906, SON OF THE LATE ROBERT LEE WILSON SR., AND LEE ANNA McSWAIN WILSON. HE WAS A GRADUATE OF HOGANSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL AND ATTENDED MERCER UNIVERSITY. HE WAS A RETIRED HEARD COUNTY POSTMASTER. HE WAS ONE OF THE OLDEST MEMBERS OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF FRANKLIN AND HAD BEEN A SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHER. THE WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN THE BUILDING OF HEARD COUNTY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL. AFTER HIS RETIREMENT HE HELPED WITH THE RESTORATION OF THE BETHEL HEARD BAPTIST CHURCH. HE WAS A MEMBER OF THE HEARD COUNTY LIONS CLUB, THE CHATTAHOOCHEE MASONIC LODGE #61 AND THE HEARD COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY. Born June 10, 1921, in Corning, Ark. to the late Leslie Oaks and Mabale Greenwood Oaks. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Virgle Phillips and a sister, Patricia Waychoff. Brown Funeral Home, Jacksonville, Ala. Leland Chester MOSLEY JR., 40 of Tallapoosa died in an automobile accident on Feb. 22, 2002. Born Feb. 21, 1961, in Bremen, Haralson Co., son of Dorothy Sloan and the late L.C. Mozley Sr. He was a policeman for the City of Buchanan from 1987 tp 1993 and was a volunteer fireman during that time. From 1993 to 2002, he was employed by the Tallapoosa Police Dept. He was a sergeant in charge of his day shift, the field training new recruits; was SWAT-certified and a SWAT team leader. He also worked part time for the Public Works Dept. of the city of Tallapoosa. Along with Scott Worthy, he received a Life Saving Award for pulling people out of burning house. Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Deborah Patterson Mozley; sons, Nathan Mosey of Buchanan, Chad Mosley, Joshua Mosley and daughter, Jennifer Mosley, all of Tallapoosa; sisters and brothers-in-law, Karla and James Anderson of Fort Payne, Ala., Rosie and Steve Poole of Rome; brother-inlaw, Richard Paterson of Dallas, Ga.; one granddaughter and a number of nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Survivors are his wife, Ruth McLain Rooks of Arnco; daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Gary King of Newnan; two grandchildren, on great-grandchild and a nephew. Marion Robert REECE, age 79, of 1087, N. Van Wert Road, Villa Rica, died Saturday, March 2, 2002. Born June 19, 1922, in Union County, Ga. to Dora Phillip reece and the late John Franklin Reece. HE WAS A WORLD WAR II ARMY VETERAN, a retired tool-and-die technician from Lockheed Martin Company and was Church of God by Faith. Besides his father, he was preceded in death by one son Johnny Reece. Hightower's Memorial Chapel, Douglasville. Tuesday , March 5, 2002 Brinton SMITH SR., 80, of 31 Dover Trail, Peachtree City, formerly of Villa Rica, died March 3, 2002. Born Oct. 8, 1921, in Carroll County, son of the late Loyd Franklin Smith and the late Myra Taylor Smith. He lived in all but the last six years of his life in Villa Rica when he moved to Peachtree City. HE SERVED IN THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE DURING WORLD WAR II. He was co-owner and operator of Florence & Smith Grocery Store in Villa Rica for about 15 yrs. Then he worked for Southwire Company for 25 years as a Payroll Supervisor. After his retirement from South wire, he worked for several years with Southern Railway before he settled in full retirement. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Villa Rica but when he moved to Peachtree City, he joined the First Baptist Church of Peachtree City. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his first wife, Ruth Johnston Florence Smith on July 8, 1995 and his brother, Robert Smith. Survivors include his wife, Sara Conner Wright Smith of Peachtree City; one daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles (Lynda and Chuck) Blount III of Houston, Tx; one son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Brinton E. Born April 6, 1958, in Maryland, son of the late Thomas Earl and Emma Pearl Mathis. He was professor and department chair of biology department at the State University of West Georgia. He held a master's and PhD from North Carolina State University and a B.S. from the University of Maryland. He was a member of New Covenant United Methodist Church. His car was hit by Waco resident Betty Chambers, 23, he died at the scene. Ms. Chambers was taken by helicopter from Tanner to Atlanta Medical Center where she is in serious condition. There doesn`t appear to be a reason for the accident, she crossed the center line. There doesn't appear to be a medical condition that would be a factor. Alcohol, drugs and speed were not factors in this collision. The 2001 Dodge Neon is to be check for possible distractions, such as a cell phone. She was heading westbound on the Carrollton Bypass between Maple Street and Hay`s Mill Road on her way home from Carrollton Academy at the time of the 6:47 p.m. crash. Mathis, also on his way home from work, was heading eastbound on the two-lane stretch of road. He was driving a 1996 Geo Prism. Police officers found his watch beside his car, the time stopped at the moment of impact. Denver GASTON, 85, of 128 Janice Place, Carrollton, died at his home Tuesday morning, March 12, 2002 after a bought with Vascular Disease. Born June 23, 1916, in Carrollton son of the late Pear King Gaston and James Henry Gaston; grand son of the late Eula Flemming Gaston and the late James Lafayette Gaston. He was a life long resident of Carrollton,. He attended Carrollton A & M which is now the State University of West Georgia. From 1932 to 1933 he worked for the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corp) where he worked on roads and with the forestry crew. He attended Monroe A&M, a Georgia Vocational and Technical School in Monroe for the next four years, Lettering two years in Football, and four years in basketball. He was on the 1926 Big 8 Basketball Championship team. He Went to Clemson University to try out for the football team, receiving a scholarship and lettering in football two years. He also attended Woodrow Wilson Law School in Atlanta and on leave from the Georgia State Patrol for THREE YEARS DURING WORLD WAR II SERVING IN THE NAVY AS A SHORE PATROL OFFICER FROM NOV. 1942 UNTIL OCT. 1945. He received a Medical Discharge from the Navy due to a broken back injury he received while serving at the CC Camp. After returning to the Georgia State Patrol he was stationed in Waycross, then reassigned to the Villa Rica Post. Married in 1948 in Folkston, Georgia to Connie Wolfe of Waycross. Resigning from the State patrol in 1949, he ran for sheriff where her served Carroll County until 1953. In 1955 he and his family went to Washington, D.C. where he underwent FBI training, returning to Carrollton to become a part of the Georgia branch of the FBI, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. In 1972 he survived and recovered from a aortic aneurysm, he retired from the GBI with 37 years of law enforcement service. He retired in 1973 at the age of 57. In 1977 he earned his real estate licenses and sold real estate with B&B reality, 1st Realty, and Ara Hansard, all of Carrollton. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carrollton.
