PAYNE, VILLA RICA Villa Rica, Ga., July 24.—(Special.)—J.C. Payne, a prominent young farmer, living at Bay Springs, two miles south of Villa Rica, died last night of congestion of the brain. Additional Comments: James was born in Monroe County, Tennessee on 20 June 1858, the youngest son of William Jasper and Mary Ann Wood(s) Payne. His siblings were Elizabeth Payne Williams, Fleming Caleb and Joseph Joshua Payne (twins), Rachel Safronie Payne Richards, and Hannah Jane Payne Maroney. James came to Carroll County with his parents and siblings shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War. His father died with measles while serving the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia and is buried in Hollywood Cemetery there. In 1877, James married Mary Elizabeth Pope, daughter of John R. and Mary Emily Boyd Pope. They had eight children: Thomas Oscar, Luna L., Emily O., Mamie C., Frank, William Claude, Lois Irene and Jimmie Payne. James is buried at Midway Macedonia Baptist Church cemetery in Carroll County.
