J.W. WORD ON OCT. 14th This community was greatly shocked last Friday afternoon to learn that Mr. J.W. Word had met his death by a pistol shot through the head, fired by his own hand. The dreadful tragedy occurred shortly after one-thirty. Mr. Word had driven two miles northeast of town, stopping his car on the road near Mr. E.T. Pike's home. An ambulance was rushed to the scene and the unfortunate man was hurried to the hospital where he died a few minutes after arriving there. Mr. Word was 44 years of age, and had spent the greater part of his life in western Georgia. The remains were taken on Saturday afternoon to Bowdon near the scene of his boyhood, where they were interred Sunday afternoon after services conducted by Mr. Edwards of Waco, Georgia, a Baptist minister who had been Mr. Word's pastor for a number of years and who paid a high tribute to his character. A service was also held in the home of the deceased in Roanoke on Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W.E. Lockler. He and a number of other Roanoke people accompanied the grief stricken family with the remains to Bowdon. Mr. Word came to Roanoke thirteen months ago from LaGrange and was representing the Metropolitan Insurance Co. He had made a very favorable impression upon all who were associated with him. In letters found on his person it was learned that he was laboring under financial troubles which overtook him before he left Georgia. The strain on his mind overbalanced his better judgment. Mr. Word is survived by a wife and six children who have the sincere sympathy of the community. He and his family had seen better, happier days before the shadows of adversity fell across their pathway. --- W.W. Word, eldest son of Mrs. J.W. Word, accompanied by her father's brother from Texas, was in town Monday and arranged to have a sale of his mother's hosuehold effects at the residence on Saturday Oct. 29th. Mrs. Word and children will move to Atlanta where W.W. Word has a position.
