BIOGRAPHY: Cynthia F. Riggs, d/o Reverend John and Jane (Florence)Riggs was born 27 Mar 1837 in Butts county, Georgia. Her parents were early settlers of Georgia. Her father, the Reverend John Riggs of South Carolina ran away from home as a youth and went to Georgia where he became a Baptist minister. Her family eventually settled in the Villa Rica district of Carroll county, near present day Temple, Ga. In 1858 Cynthia married William Allen Coleman, s/o Henry Allen and Sarah Ann (Barnes) Coleman, and the couple made their home in Carroll county. To them were born John W. and William F. Coleman. Following the War Between The States, the family moved to Spanish Honduras along with other Ex-Confederate soldiers and their families in order to escape the harsh era of Reconstruction. Many of the imigrants died due to the disease and primitive living conditions prevelant in Spanish Honduras at that time. Cynthia was among the casualties. She died in Honduras on February 3rd 1877. Because of requirements incurred from the Honduran goverment, Wiliam A. Coleman and his eldest son, John W. Coleman were unable to escort Cynthia back to Carroll county for burial which was her wish. The task fell upon their youngest child William Forrest Coleman, who only about 12 years old and unaided, escorted his mother's body back to Carroll county for burial. Cynthia was buried in the Bethel Baptist Church cemetery, near presnt day Temple, Ga., where many other members of her family are laid to rest. Upon Cynthia's grave monument is written the following epitaph: "Sleep my dearest sleep My sorrow can not disturb thee, Altho I should ever weep, and ever sacred thy memory keep. SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF MRS CYNTHIA F. COLEMAN Wife of W.A. Coleman and Mother of J.W. & W.F. Coleman Born March 27, 1837 Died February 3rd, 1877 Aged 39 years 10 months and 24 days Neighbor and devoted christian 21 years Member of the Missionary Baptist Church" Postscript: While Cynthia's obituary states that she died in route from Honduras, family sources from Honduras state that she did in fact die at the family residence in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
