Shearouse of said State and County, hereby applies for the pension provided by Act of 1910 to Confederate Soldiers, and submits his sworn statement, with his testimony to make out the same, and after being duly sworn true answers to make to the questions propounded, answers as follows, to wit: 1. What is your name and where do you reside? (Give County and Post-office) E. S. Shearouse, Savannah, Chatham Co. Ga. 2. How long and since when have you been a continuous resident citizen of this State? I have lived in this State all my life. 3. Did you enlist in the Army of the Confederate States or of the Organized Militia of this State from 1861 to 1865? Enlisted in the Confederate Army. 4. When and where, and in what Company and Regiment did you enlist? (Give the arm and class of Service) At Savannah Ga July 1864, Co A - 5th Ga Reserves 5. How long did you remain in the actual Military Service with said Company and Regiment? (Give date of discharge) Until the Surrender of Genl. Johnston 6. When and where was your Company and Regiment surrendered or discharged from the Service? At Greensboro N. Ca. Apl. 6th 65 7. Were you actually present with your Command when it was surrendered or discharged? I was not 8. If you were not actually present, state specifically and clearly where you were. I was captured when on way to Greensboro with Army taken sick and carried to Raleigh NC a. Where was your Command when you left it? On the Route to Greensboro NC b. When did you leave the Command? Was captured about 12th Apl 1865 c. For what cause did you leave? I was taken sick on March and captured d. By whose authority did you leave? Officer and Surgeon of Regt. e. For how long was your leave granted? In what way? In Hospital at Raleigh as a prisoner about 2 weeks before Surrender f. Why did you not return to your Command after leave expired? Could not g. In what way were you prevented? By being a prisoner h. What effort did you make to return? Could make none i. Were you captured during the war? Yes j. If so, when, and where? In what prison were you held and when were you released? Near Raleigh N.C. while on the march 9. What is your name and where do you reside? J. H. Hinely, Effingham Co. Ga. 2. How long and since when have you known E. S. Shearouse the applicant? Ever since boyhood days. 3. Where does he reside, and since when has he been a bona fide, continuing resident in this State and how do you know? Savannah Chatham Co Ga. 4. When, where and in what Company and Regiment did 5th Regt. Ga Res enlist during war from 1861 to 1865? (Give date and place) Co. A Savannah Ga July 10 1864 5. How did you obtain your information of this Service? I was in same Company and Regiment. 6. How long within your own personal knowledge did he perform actual military service with this Company and Regiment? (give date) Until he was left sick in Apl 1865 while we were on march 7. When and where was his Command surrendered or discharged (give date and place) at or near Greensboro N.C. Apl 26th 1865 8. Were you personally present at the Surrender? I was 9. Shearouse for Pension is the person he represents himself to be and resides in said County. That I also know J.H. Hinely the witness swearing to the service and A.K. Wilson and J.H. Hinely who are freeholders, that they are all residents of said County and were duly sworn by me before signing the foregoing affidavit and they are all truthful and trustworthy and their statements are entitled to full faith and credit. Berry Ordinary Effingham County, Ga. =============================================================================== APPLICATION FOR PENSION BY A WIDOW Whose Deceased Husband Was on the Pension Roll of Georgia. STATE OF GEORGIA, Chatham County. Personally before me comes Mrs. Frances L. Shearouse of said County, who, after having been duly sworn, says that she is the widow of Edward S. Shearouse to whom, in the County of Effingham State of Georgia she was married on the 9th day of February 1870 and that she remained his wife, and resided with him to the date of his death in February 9th 1929 and that she has not since his death remarried; at the time of his death he was a resident of Chatham County, in said State of Georgia, and he was on the Soldier Pension Roll of the State and paid a pension of $200.00 in Chatham County for 1928 (per annum), on account of being a soldier in Company A Regiment 5th Ga. Regiment (Volunteers or State Militia). That she is now a bona fide resident citizen of said State of Georgia and she has, continuously, resided there since of all her life. Personally before me comes Mrs. Lela Jones known to be a responsible and truthful person, residing in said County who after having been duly sworn, says that of deponent's own personal knowledge, Mrs. Frances L. Shearouse who made the foregoing affidavit, is the lawful widow of Edward S. Shearouse who died in Chatham County in said State of Georgia on the 9th day of February, 1929, and that she has not since remarried; that she became the wife of Edward S. Shearouse on the 9th day of February, 1870, that she and he had resided together as husband and wife, continuously, since 9th day of Feb. 1870, and that he was the same man who was on the pension roll of said State Georgia from Chatham County Georgia when he died.
