"Savannah Cadets"



"The Savannah Cadets was organized May 17, 1861, as a
company of boys, most of whom run about sixteen years of
age. On May 13, 1862, the company was mustered into the
Confederate Army and did duty on the coast around Savannah
until May 1863, when they joined the Army of Tennessee at
Dalton, Georgia"

Branch, Hamilton McDevit -- Enlisted as a private in Company
B, 5th Regiment Georgia Infantry May 21, 1861. Wounded at
Dam #1, and sent to Richmond, Virginia, and from there to
Savannah, Georgia Elected 2nd Lieutenant of Company F, 54th
Regiment Georgia Infantry May 13, 1862; 1st Lieutenant
September 22, 1863. Furloughed for 5 days from December 15,
1863. Severely wounded near Atlanta, Georgia June 24, 1864.
At home, wounded, until September 1864, when he rejoined
command. Wounded December 16, 1864. Returned to command
April 1865. Being unfit for field duty he was detailed to
collect absentees.

54th Infantry Regiment, organized at Savannah, Georgia,
during the summer of 1862, contained men recruited in the
counties of Lamar, Appling, Harris, Muscogee, Bartow,
Chatham, and Barrow. The unit moved to the Charleston area
and was involved in numerous conflicts including the fight
at Battery Wagner. Later it was assigned to Mercer's and
J.A. Smith's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. The 54th
participated in the Atlanta Campaign, Hood's Tennessee
operations, and the Battle of Bentonville. During the
Atlanta Campaign, July 20 to September 1, it reported 93
casualties and in December, 1864, totalled 168 effectives.
The regiment surrendered on April 26, 1865. Colonel Charlton
H. Way, Lieutenant Colonel Morgan Rawls, and Major William
H. Mann were in command.
